Google Reveals New Pixel 5 Phone and Price | Game Rant

After news broke last month that Google was discontinuing the Pixel 4, its flagship smartphone from last year, people have been interested to see its successor, the Pixel 5. They’ve had to wait a few weeks, but today Google officially lifted the veil off the new phone, when it will become available, and how much it will cost.

During its online Launch Night In event, it announced that the Pixel 5 is now available for pre-order. The new phone will be launching on October 15 with prices starting at $699, a full $100 less than the Pixel 4 cost at launch last year. What’s more, it will come bundled with a few extras like three months of Statida Pro and YouTube Premium, as well as 100GB of Google One cloud storage.

If the lower price wasn’t enough of an indication, Google is doing things a little differently this time around. Instead of trying to compete with iPhones and other higher-end smartphones, like the previous four Pixels, the Pixel 5 is more of a mid-range option. The biggest sign of this transition is that it uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor, as opposed to the Snapdragon 865 used by other flagship Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. While this means less speed than other phones, the Pixel 5 should still be able to run at a solid clip, while also boasting 8GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage, and 5G connectivity.

Another noticeable downgrade is that the Pixel 5 doesn’t come with the Motion Sense gesture-recognition system of the Pixel 4, but this leaves room for Google to improve other features. In keeping with previous Pixels, the new phone goes hard on its cameras, introducing several new features that will let users take multiple shots at different exposure levels, turn old photos into portrait shots, and a “cinematic pan” option for filming panning shots, to name a few.

Google says the Pixel 5 also sports considerably improved battery life, having upgraded from a 2,800mAh battery to a 4,080mAh one that will allow for up to 48 hours of charge thanks to a new “extreme battery saver” option. What’s more, the phone supports reverse wireless charging, meaning users will be able to use it as a wireless charger for other devices.

In addition to the Pixel 5, Google also announced a new $499 version of the recently-released Pixel 4A that also boasts the Snapdragon 765G processor and 5G support. Unfortunately, the company has yet to reveal when this model will be available.

The Pixel 5 will launch on October 15.
