The next batch of free games with Google Stadia Pro has been revealed. Players can look forward to some spooky action on Stadia in time for Halloween, and also some very highly regarded indies.
The games will be available on October 1 and throughout the month. The highlight of October’s free games is arguably Dead by Daylight, an asymmetric horror game with a great progression system and solid gameplay.
Celeste may be the highest-rated game of the month’s titles. Celeste is a charming and challenging platformer developed by Matt Makes Games that won numerous awards in 2018 including Best Independent Game at The Game Awards.
Superhot: Mind Control Delete was a surprise release earlier this year, as a follow up to the time-based action shooter. The game sees players dodging bullets as if they are in The Matrix, moving time forward in order to eliminate a room of enemies. The game is free for anyone who owned the original Superhot, but for Stadia users who didn’t try the original, having Mind Control Delete for free is a nice bonus.
Another one of the free games is Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, an isometric adventure title that is a complete departure from the third person action of the series. Indie game Human: Fall Flat is also on the list, a very goofy physics-based platform-puzzle game. Hand-drawn action adventure Jotun rounds out October’s free games.
To recap October’s free Google Stadia games:
Dead by Daylight
Celeste
Superhot: Mind Control Delete
Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris
Human: Fall Flat
Jotun
The monthly free titles for Stadia Pro members seem like a nice deal initially, but when compared to something like Xbox Game Pass, the value may not add up. A Stadia Pro subscription costs $10 a month, and the benefits include the monthly free games and a few additional things such as Destiny 2 for free. Meanwhile, Xbox Game Pass costs the same amount and offers hundreds of games for free, including all Xbox first-party titles on day one. The difference, for now, is that Stadia provides the streaming, and Game Pass is all downloads. However, xCloud and Game Pass streaming is currently on Android and will eventually be on more devices.
The surprise competition for Stadia is Amazon’s Luna. Luna went the Netflix/Xbox Game Pass route, as all of the games are available to stream for a single monthly price (as opposed to Stadia which asks players to purchase the full games). It will be interesting to see if Stadia eventually shifts gears, changing to a full-on subscription model for all of its games. For now, the free monthly games are a nice bonus for those who are in the Stadia ecosystem, and this month’s offerings should be solid enough to keep players entertained.
