No Sudden Move Could Be the Next Ocean’s 11 (or Logan Lucky)

Ocean’s 11 director Steven Soderbergh will begin filming a new heist film titled No Sudden Move for Warner Bros. Pictures and HBO Max. Joining the ensemble cast of the film are David Harbour, Noah Jupe, Kieran Culkin, and Brendan Fraser.

Production on No Sudden Move will begin on September 28 in Detroit, with strict protocols being enforced to protect the health of the cast and crew amid the COVID-19 crisis. Previously titled Kill Switch, the film was originally going to begin production in Spring. However, the project was one of many to temporarily shut down production due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Consequently, the postponement prevented actors George Clooney, John Cena, and Sebastian Stan from continuing to work on the film. Now, the all-star cast will include the previously mentioned actors alongside Don Cheadle, Benicio Del Toro, Amy Seimetz, Jon Hamm, Ray Liotta, Bill Duke, Frankie Shaw, and Julia Fox. “The last time I shot a movie in Detroit with a great script and a great cast things worked out really well, so I’m very excited behind my mask right now,” said Soderbergh in a statement.

Written by Men in Black and Bill & Ted Face the Music scribe Ed Solomon, No Sudden Move centers on a group of small-time crooks in 1955 Detriot who are hired to steal a seemingly simple document. However, the crooks end up searching for who hired them after their plan goes horribly wrong. In their quest to discover the purpose for which they were hired, the group finds themselves weaving “through all echelons of the race-torn, rapidly changing city.”

No Sudden Move is part of the three-year first-look deal Soderbergh signed with HBO and HBO Max this year. The filmmaker previously collaborated HBO Max on the upcoming drama titled Let Them All Talk starring Meryl Streep and Gemma Chan.

The Ocean’s films are not Soderbergh’s only experiences with heists. As recently as 2017, the filmmaker officially came out of retirement to helm the heist comedy Logan Lucky with Channing Tatum and James Bond actor Daniel Craig. (It’s a great film in and of itself, but an absolute must-see for Craig’s performance.)

No Sudden Move will be released on HBO Max on a yet-to-be-announced date.
