The stage was set last night for the first U.S. presidential debate leading up to November’s 2020 election and early reviews are pointing at it as an absolute bust, where President Donald Trump and democratic nominee Joe Biden traded blows non-stop for 90 minutes, while moderator Chris Wallace struggled to enforce the rules for the night.
Struggled is perhaps an understatement, seeing as both candidates constantly interrupted each other, with President Trump at times completely drowning out the former vice president’s speech making the debate particularly hard to sit through for anyone; and, on the subject of struggling things that are difficult to watch, it reminded a certain someone of the Fantastic Four films, specifically 2015’s version directed by Josh Trank.
If there’s one saving grace from this political tussle, it’s having the maker of one the worst superhero movies in recent memory take the opportunity to laugh at his own shameful work.
Starring Michael B. Jordan and Kate Mara, Fantastic Four was a complete financial and critical flop that still manages to spark regret among its creative team, and is most notable for taking home a bunch of Razzie awards, including 2015’s Worst Picture. Suffice to say, the noteworthy failure killed any potential sequels, though a MCU feature film is likely to come at some point.
Adding insult to injury, Sharknado writer Thunder Levin also showed on Twitter, calling the debate “the worst thing I’ve ever seen, and I wrote #Sharknado”. And then Luke Skywalker chimed in, as Mark Hamill compared the debate to the Star Wars Holiday Special.
2016’s presidential campaign gave the world Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump and Kate McKinnon’s Hilary Clinton hilarious impressions, but as SNL prepares returns this October 3rd with Jim Carrey playing Joe Biden, the source material is looking way more dry than four years ago. So, yes, definitely worse than Fantastic Four.
