Jane McGonigal, author of Reality is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World, said “gameplay is the direct emotional opposite of depression.” As video game publishers gain access to more technology, employees, and resources, they are more inclined to meet the demands of their consumers. Many, or even most, of these consumers push for more story and conversation. But does this expansion always result in a better product?
Remnant: From the Ashes is a video game that places action and gameplay above narrative and dialogue. Developer Gunfire Games lives up to their name by setting a quaint stage and then letting the action-oriented adventure speak for itself. They have not, however, abandoned characterization entirely. Throughout the mayhem, the player will hear the name ‘Les.’ This list dedicated itself to uncovering the mysteries of this hidden character.
10 He Never Speaks
Looking at the credits, it turns out that Les never once speaks. For a guy that is mentioned on multiple occasions, from the very first mission even, he sure is the quiet type. Players feel like any second they will hear a unique voice and excitedly shout, “Les!” but it is not to be.
It’s too bad because he is spoken of as an insider and a guy who knows a thing or two about the world. It sure would be nice to hear his voice chime in when locked into combat with one of the game’s stronger enemies.
9 He Never Appears
After knowing he never speaks, the next step is trying to get eyes on him. But players can search all up and down Ward 13 and never get a trace of him. And if the character is waiting for him to swoop in and save the day, they’ll be waiting forever.
No, Les isn’t fictitious, he’s just never there when he’s wanted. As the protagonist uncovers what they need to do, and learns how to make survival easier, gamers can keep watching all they want for the stealthy Les and they will leave disappointed.
8 Still Alive
Maybe he’s dead? After all, with the Root plaguing the world of Remnant: From the Ashes, it seems natural that he’d have bit the dust. But as the player moves about Ward 13 and listens to the conversation happening all around them, new information indicates otherwise.
It’s just a stroke of bad luck (or maybe good luck, see the next section) that the player keeps just barely missing him. Everyone else in the camp speaks like they just barely got done talking with him. So he’s alive, maybe killing bosses alternatively. He’s just a bit too elusive.
7 Likes To Scare People
Players who wish to get into the mind of Les should pay attention to how people say his name. It’s not, “Hey Les, how’s it going, buddy?” or, “I sure can’t wait to see Les again!” Instead, there are tones and notes of startled terror.
Using the context clues, the fear in their throats is not because Les is a murderer or villain, it’s because he’s a trickster. Les apparently likes scaring people, close friends and refugees alike. Maybe he’ll get his own stealth spinoff game someday!
6 Frenemy With Ace Cotterill
In earnest, the first time Les is mentioned is by Ace Cotterill, who is pointing around a flashlight in the darkness of the Reactor area and, to no surprise, is begging Les not to scare her. This isn’t a first time event, she seems like she’s been through this before.
It’s hard to tell exactly how good of friends they might be since it sounds like he gets on her nerves, but love/hate relationships are nothing new to video gaming, just ask Fire Emblem. Either way, he knows her well and, maybe in the future, players will get to see if that’s a good or a bad thing.
5 Relationship With Mud Tooth
As players go to visit Mud Tooth for his in-game buffs, they’ll have the opportunity to hear him ramble a bit. With a bit of time and patience, he’ll ask about Les, Ace Cotterill, and Commander Ford, inquiring how they are doing.
By this time, the player will have briefly met both Commander Ellen Ford and Ace Cotterill. The fact that Les is mentioned in the same breath as these two means that, at one time, he must have been one of the best video game companions ever… to an NPC, anyhow.
4 Veteran
Mud Tooth’s mention also puts together a few of the pieces that connect Les to the group. If Les was hanging around Ford and Cotterill, then Les is no stranger to combat, especially knowing the history of these two.
There is a rich history of powerful fighting characters in video games that Les is a part of, it seems, if only the main character got to see the man himself in action. Even without seeing it, looking at the world that Les lives in, this evidence is strong enough to indicate that Les can hold his own in a battle.
3 Underling To Commander Ford
Commander Ellen Ford gives a few orders to the player character when they first meet and then goes back to wondering exactly when Les is going to show up with his report. So Les does not just live in Ward 13, he works there and fights there.
He’s not the top dog in the chain of command, but he’s got a place. As Commander Ford glances over her maps, she clearly needs the information in the report that Les is about to deliver. So what kind of information is Les in charge of bringing exactly?
2 Recon
By doing a bit more detective work, Commander Ford is looking at her maps as she discussed which roads are open and closed due to the Root. She’s looking right at them as she wonders aloud of the whereabouts of Les.
There is a good chance that Les is putting his ability to never be seen to good use; he’s likely giving Ford all of the information she can get about where the Root has spread to and how far. Give him some goggles and maybe he’ll be able to do some good work straightening out the Splinter Cell series.
1 Sleeps Outside
During the game, players get the opportunity to explore all four levels of Ward 13: The Control Room, the Reactor, the Ward 13 Central Hub, and the Research Room. None of those areas have a room available for the missing man, Les.
So the power of deduction dictates that Les must be sleeping outside. That syncs up with his position of doing recon for Ward 13. Les dedicates his every moment, awake and asleep, to defending the survivors and making sure that they stay alive.
