Classic sitcom Saved by the Bell is making a comeback very soon, though it’s not quite the show that fans will remember. The new Saved by the Bell is a reimagining of sort, though still starring some of the characters who played important roles in the original. It was recently announced that the revival will officially premiere on the Peacock streaming service this year, November 25th.
The new version of the show will focus on the class of the new millennium, but will still feature significant roles for returning characters AC Slater and Jessie Spano, as well as guest star roles for Zack and Kelly Morris. That said, the show isn’t really positioning itself as a revival or a continuation, rather it’s trying to be a modern version of the original concept, allowing itself to be inspired by the original, while also appealing to a modern audience beyond fans of the original.
While discussing the new show, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who played Zack Morris in the original, said “The characters are larger than life; they’re a little more animated than we were back in the ’80s and ’90s. And I think it’s a fun version.” It seems as though the show is hoping to be a little more exaggerated than the previous incarnation, while still capturing the same spirit. Some things are still the same however: The famous “time-out” fourth wall breaks are still around, although more characters can use them, and the expected relationship drama will be in there too, with a Morris and a Spano fighting over the same girl.
There are quite a few new faces this time around as well. Some of the new names appearing will be Belmont Cameli as Jamie Spano, Mitchell Hoog as Mac Morris, and John Michael Higgens as Principal Toddman. All these actors, plus more, will be working under showrunner and executive producer Tracey Wigfield with the cooperation of Universal Television. The Peacock app has also featured the revival of several other beloved shows, including a Psych movie that premiered with the launch of the app, and a Punky Brewster reboot that has yet to be released.
Saved by the Bell will premiere on Peacock November 25th.
