Insomniac’s Spider-Man game on the PS4 will soon be heading to the PS5 as Spider-Man Remastered, a next-gen upscaling that will be included with the Ultimate Edition of Spider Man: Miles Morales. Being able to take one of the current generation’s best open-world action games into the next will be a big enough selling point for a lot of fans, but Insomniac has assured that the remaster will offer more than just spruced-up visuals.
This week has seen several developers sharing details on their PS5 launch titles on the PlayStation, and today it was Insomniac’s turn with Spider-Man Remastered. Stressing that the PS5 version will be a “full next-gen remastering” of the 2018 PS4 game, Community Director James Stevenson opened up on the ways it will take advantage of the PS5’s advanced hardware and unique features.
As a PS5 title, the remaster will utilize the console’s Solid-State Drive (SSD) to virtually eliminate loading screens. This is fitting since Spider-Man was the first game used to demonstrate the PS5 SSD’s faster load speeds. That being said, Stevenson assured fans that they’ll have the option to turn on the humorous fast-travel animations of Spidey taking the subway if they want.
Spider Man Remastered will also sport upgraded features like Spatial 3D Audio with compatible headphones and support for the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers of the PS5’s DualSense controller, though Stevenson didn’t say how the game will use these. Additionally, the remaster’s photo mode will be enhanced with a number of new features being developed for Spider-Man: Miles Morales, including the ability to place lights in the environment and change Spidey’s suit after a shot has been lined up.
All of these new features will be on top of the graphical overhaul the game will receive on the PS5. Environments will be enhanced with ray-traced reflections, ambient shadows, and an updated weather system, while character models will sport updated skin, eyes, hair, and more. The most noticeable change, though, will be how Spider-Man Remastered has redone Peter Parker’s face, as the remaster will be replacing John Bubniak’s original facial capture performance with one by Ben Jordan.
Not all of the news surrounding the remaster has been good. Insomniac has confirmed that Spider-Man Remastered won’t have a standalone, and that the game won’t support cross-saves with the PS4 version of Spider-Man, a move that has left fans rather unhappy. Still, with all of the upgrades Insomniac is bringing to the game for the next-generation, it’s not likely that these missing features will do much to dim most fans’ excitement for it and Miles Morales’ release.
Spider-Man Remastered will launch on November 12 for PS5, bundled with Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition.
