Elder Scrolls Fan Gets Skyrim Playing on Their Keyboard

There may be nothing that the Internet seems to love talking about, making fun of, and showing off more than Bethesda’s latest entry in the Elder Scrolls series, Skyrim. Between the countless Skyrim memes, community-built mods, and official ports, the game is everywhere, with some players going the extra mile to make sure it appears in the least expected places.

One Elder Scrolls fan, in particular, has gone to Reddit to show off one of the more interesting ways that players can interact with and modify Skyrim. The user, u/Mr_Murdoc, somehow managed to get the game to run by using the keyboard as a screen, rather than as a controller.

Using a Steel Series Apex 7 TKL keyboard, MR_Murdoc has taken the attached LED screen, usually used to display settings for the device, and was able to display Skyrim through this section of the keyboard in a very basic form. Seeing as how the LED screen is only able to show two-toned images with a very limited availability of motion and a very low resolution, this isn’t exactly an HD or 4K port that places the game onto this keyboard. Of course, according to the poster’s own admission, this is less of a modded version of Skyrim, but is more of a programming trick that allows the Steel Series’ display area to mimic the output that another device is running.

According to Mr_Murdoc, the key to this effect is a program called “Steelseries OLED Display Mirror,” which works in tandem with the Steel Series Engine 3 app. The effect is accomplished by using these programs to make the display mirror what the computer is currently running through its monitor, giving the illusion of running the game on the keyboard itself. So, while the visual is fairly impressive, this doesn’t require a Skyrim mod in order to get it running.

Whether or not this port is real in the sense that it can actually make a game run through the programming and hardware on a keyboard, it’s still a fairly impressive effect that could be used for other purposes. This could be a new Skyrim challenge that would make playing significantly harder if the only way to view the game is through a tiny, pixilated display. Similarly, a separate program could project the game to all sorts of different places.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is available now for PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.
