The next-generation PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles are on the horizon, meaning it’s time to take a look back at the best games the PS4 and Xbox One had to offer. With it being October, it seems fitting to highlight the 31 best horror games that were released on PS4 and Xbox One in a countdown to Halloween.
The first game we want to highlight is Remothered: Tormented Fathers from Stormind Games and Darril Arts. Released in 2018 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One (and later ported to the Nintendo Switch), Remothered: Tormented Fathers is a spiritual successor to the classic Clock Tower survival-horror series, and is an admirable attempt at bringing that old-school horror formula to modern consoles.
Remothered: Tormented Fathers retains the puzzle-solving gameplay common in not just Clock Tower but classic survival-horror games in general, tasking players with solving them all the while dealing while avoiding deadly enemies. Stealth is key to success in Remothered: Tormented Fathers, and failing to stay out of sight often leads to a gruesome death. The high-stakes gameplay combined with the eerie visuals create an atmosphere of genuine tension, making Remothered a particularly scary and unnerving game.
Some critics complained that Remothered: Tormented Fathers doesn’t have enough variety in its gameplay, but hopefully that complaint is addressed in the sequel. Remothered: Broken Porcelain is set to launch later this month, serving as the second installment in a planned horror trilogy. Early impressions of Remothered: Broken Porcelain have been mostly positive, and so fans of the original game should definitely keep it on their radar.
And while Remothered: Tormented Fathers didn’t impress everyone, it was well-received by Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama. Toyama has also worked on other horror game projects, like the Siren series, so that is some significant praise, to say the least. Toyama even went as far as to say that he “fell in love” with the game and its story, and that he would like to collaborate with Remothered director Chris Darril on a project at some point down the line.
Whether or not that ever comes to pass remains to be seen, but fans should have plenty to look forward to from both famed creators. Toyama is rumored to be working on the mysterious Silent Hill PS5 game, whereas Darril is getting ready to launch Remothered: Broken Porcelain, and presumably start work on the third and final game in the trilogy.
Remothered: Tormented Fathers is out now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
