With its release date a little over a month away, marketing for Cyberpunk 2077 is beginning to ramp up. Developer CD Projekt Red might already have a dedicated group of fans that are ready to jump into Nighty City, but its efforts to entice the masses are just beginning.
CDPR has been giving fans a closer look at Cyberpunk 2077 through a series of online ‘Night City Wire’ events focused on the ins and outs of the game. But the first marketing stunt that boosted the hype for Cyberpunk 2077 back in 2019 was the reveal that Keanu Reeves would be playing a character in the game.
Now CD Projekt Red is bringing in Reeves again, this time for a short TV spot promoting Cyberpunk 2077. The ad was first played during the most recent NBA Finals Game and features Reeves narrating against a cyberpunk-esque background, paired with some slick gameplay footage and background music featuring Billie Eilish’s ‘Bad Guys’. The TV spot is a good opener for those who may be new to the game, with Reeves’ telling the audience: “In 2077, what makes someone a criminal? Getting caught. In Night City you can become anybody, anything, if your body can pay the price. So seize the day and set it on fire.”
This seems to be a decent summary of the major focuses in Cyberpunk 2077. The game has been proudly promoting its huge new open world of Night City, which looks to encourage hours of in-depth exploration across its different districts. The lifepath and character customization options will allow players to literally become anyone and forge their own narrative in Cyberpunk 2077. But with crime and violence rampant in Night City, players will have plenty of opportunities to use futuristic weapons and cybernetic upgrades to get the job done.
The ad is likely to score well with new viewers having brought in big names with Reeves and the use of a hit song from Billie Eilish. Whether CD Projekt Red will roll out more ads featuring Reeves or Grimes’ character Lizzy Wizzy is uncertain, but there’s still plenty of time before Cyberpunk 2077’s release to continue to build its popularity.
Reeves will be playing Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077, an infamous rockstar and rebel in Night City. Silverhand appeared at the end of a Cyberpunk 2077 story trailer, but according to in-game history, Silverhand disappeared and was presumed dead after his rebellion. It’s unknown how big a part Reeves’ will play in the Cyberpunk 2077′s narrative but his character looks to have big plans for a rebellion that involves the protagonist, V.
Cyberpunk 2077 releases November 19 for PC, PS4, Stadia Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
