Pokemon Journeys has certainly been managing to appeal to fans’ nostalgia. Aside from focusing on Ash revisiting previous regions, as well as the new Galar region from Pokemon Sword and Shield, plenty of beloved characters have made a return to the series at some point. Only last month did Ash go back to Alola, the setting of the Sun and Moon games and series, where he reunited with his Alolan team and the friends he made there.
Now some fans are convinced that a certain fan-favorite will be making a surprise return at some point in the future; namely Ash’s Charizard. As for why fans think this will be the case, it comes from a recently revealed tie-in toy set releasing in Japan soon.
The set contains figures for three Pokemon: Charizard, Flygon, and Dragapult. And featured on the toy’s box are Ash, his friend Goh, and Leon, Galar’s Champion from Pokemon Sword and Shield. It’s believed that each figure is meant to match the three characters, as Leon has a Dragapult as part of his team in the games and Goh owns a Flygon. This leaves Charizard matching with Ash.
However, Charizard is also the star of Leon’s team, so could the Charizard in the toy set be his? While it might seem weird for the set to feature Ash on the box but not have any of his Pokemon, it could be argued that he’s only there because he’s the main character.
While there’s no concrete answer and Ash’s Charizard has yet to be officially teased for any future Pokemon Journeys episodes, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see him come back considering his popularity in both the games and the show.
Ash’s Charizard had one of the most beloved arcs in the original Pokemon series, initially disobedient after evolving and infamously costing Ash a victory in the Pokemon League, before eventually growing to respect Ash and become one of his most powerful team members.
Though Ash left Charizard in the Charific Valley during his visit to Johto, he occasionally returned to help out (one famous example being in the third movie where he showed up to save Ash from the legendary Entei), before becoming a mainstay of his Unova team, and is now resting at Professor Oak’s lab. But while Charizard’s return isn’t a dead certainty, a recent trailer for the series does tease an appearance by Mewtwo. In fact, it could very well be the same Mewtwo from the first Pokemon movie.
In the meantime, one piece of merchandise fans can get their hands on is a large Snorlax plush from Thailand. Pre-orders are available, though they do come with a pretty large price-tag, with even the small versions costing about $145.
