No Man Sky’s Origins Update has massively overhauled the four-year old game with improved visuals, better mechanics, new weather elements, and more creatures. But the update also changed some conditions on existing planets, which has led to an extremely- rare species becoming extinct on the capital planet of the Galactic Hub, the game’s player-run community.
Diplos are extremely hard to come by in No Man’s Sky. The long-necked dinosaur creature is one of the rarest aliens in the game, with a reported encounter chance of only .25%. The Diplo is so rare that players have created repositories recording which planets that the creatures have been sighted on. The Diplo is also as popular as it is rare, and has been adopted as the emblem of the Galactic Hub, a community of players that colonizes planets to build mega cities. In honor of its mascot, the Galactic Hub only chooses capital planets that are host to the Diplo.
However, following the changes that came with the Origins update, Diplos have gone extinct on the Galactic Hub’s current capital, New Lennon. The Diplos were one of the defining features of the planet, which became well-known among the community for its blue water and tropical climate. New Lennon is so popular that it hosts more individual player bases than in any planet in the game’s universe, according to the No Man’s Sky wiki. With its mascot eradicated from the planet, the Galactic Hub is now looking for a new Diplo planet to make its capital.
Each new No Man’s Sky update changes the existing planets to some degree. In the past, this has sometimes led to the deletion of player bases. While the Origins update made no major changes to existing planets, it still tweaked small details on several worlds. New Lennon was no exception. While the planet still has its tropical climate, its formerly green grasslands have turned to shade of red and its population of Diplos is now officially extinct.
The Galactic Hub has high hopes for its new capital. Not only does it aim to find a new home with a population of Diplos, its new capital must also have varied biomes, a storm-free climate, and a rare species of beetle. It is worth noting that this does not mean that the entire community is picking up and moving. The Galactic Hub has colonized several planets, and the move will mark the fourth time the community changed its capital. There are still several members of the community scattered throughout the No Man’s Sky‘s universe.
Despite removing the Diplos from New Lennon, many fans have praised the Origins update for its great amount of content.
No Man’s Sky is on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
