The Seven Deadly Sins Seizes Top Spot as Most Searched Netflix Anime in the World

When searching for a new anime to watch, there are several possible approaches. Recommendations from friends are fine, but what if they have bad taste? Best to leave it up to the greater public by learning what  the most popular Netflix Original anime is. The answer, by the way, is fantasy-action title The Seven Deadly Sins followed by the grown-up furries of Beastars.

Netlix is notoriously tight-lipped about viewing data, but content marketing company NeoMam Studios stepped in to crunch the numbers. It used the search engine Flixable and Google’s Keyword planner to help analyze Netflix’s entire library of titles. Their statistics are based purely on data from last year and only include original anime produced by Netflix, but it is still some keen insight into which of its titles are popular around the world.

The Seven Deadly Sins earned its No. 1 ranking by being the top-searched show in 127 countries and seemed to validate what was a small investment for Netflix in 2015. The Seven Deadly Sins and the sci-fi epic Knights of Sidonia were the first anime series licensed by the streaming giant at the time. The anime shares a genre with popular shows like Naruto and One Piece and earned enough of a following to warrant a third season, which is coming in January 2021. The show follows a band of knights convicted of murder and branded traitors who aid a princess trying to take back her realm.

If The Seven Deadly Sins marks the beginning of Netflix’ venture into licensing anime, then Beastars is where it ended up. It released in 2019 and was the most searched title in 35 countries including Japan according to NeoMam’s data. It’s is an adaptation of an award winning manga by Paru Itagaki and is set to wrap up its four-year run in October. The anime adaptation is like a mature version of the Disney movie Zootopia and follows a young wolf in high school named Legosi as he navigates a society divided between herbivores and carnivores.

Netflix’s anime library has grown to 55 original titles since Seven Deadly Sins released and has muscled its way into the seasonal anime conversation alongside niche streaming services like Crunchyroll and Funimation. Among the more recent titles to make the “most searched” list are Castlevania, which released its third season in February. According to NeoMam’s data, it is the most searched title in Greece and Croatia. Another would be Violet Evergarden, an anime about a woman trying to find her emotions again after fighting in a brutal and bloody war, which took the most-searched title in Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

The top spot belongs to Seven Deadly Sins right now but whose to say that does not change next season considering the global pandemic and an entire year of streamers cooped up indoors finally able to catch on their backlog. Maybe 2020 will belong to shows like the heist anime The Great Pretenders or a disaster epic like Japan Sinks.
