New Pokemon Tourney Gives Legendaries A Chance to Shine

Pokemon Sword and Shield will let players use Legendary and Mythical Pokemon for a special tournament event in mid-October. Known as “The Battle of Legends,” the tournament will offer Double Battles and a chance to earn Battle Points.

Pokemon Sword and Shield carry on the series tradition of including a few Legendary Pokemon – exceptionally powerful combatants with unique Abilities, moves, and in-game lore. Depending on the game version, players can catch legendary dogs Zacian or Zamazenta in Sword and Shield. Regardless of version, players also catch the fearsome dragon-like Eternatus. Thanks to cross-game linking through Pokemon Home, fans can also bring Legendaries like Mewtwo into the latest games. Through promotional events, players have also caught distribution-exclusive Mythical Pokemon like Zeraora.

The Battle of Legends will run from Thursday, October 15th, to Sunday, October 18th. Players can bring one Legendary or Mythical Pokemon on their team, which otherwise follows standard Double Battle rules. Eligible Pokemon include Mewtwo, Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Keldeo, Cosmog, Cosmoem, Solgaleo, Lunala, Necrozma, Magearna, Marshadow, Zeraora, Meltan, Melmetal, Zacian, Zamazenta, Eternatus, and Zarude. Pokemon Go fans may be disappointed to see that this event will probably take place in advance of the upcoming Gigantamax Melmetal promotion.

It’s worth noting that the game allows some Legendary Pokemon in normal tournaments. Although their status as Legendary Pokemon is questionable, Pokemon like Type: Null and Virizion frequently appear in competitive play. The latest games even provide the player with a guaranteed Type: Null during one post-game event. Still, the superior power of icons like Mewtwo and Eternatus is without question, and it is clear why they are restricted to this special format.

Some may worry that a harsh meta-game will quickly form in the Battle of Legends tournament. Many players have access to Pokemon like Eternatus, Zacian, and (following a popular Pokemon Home promotion) Zeraora. This means players will surely see many teams built around these particular Pokemon, and therefore, may build teams to counter them. Players with access to less common Legendary and Mythical Pokemon have more options for team-building, and this may let them catch opponents off-guard.

Even with these concerns, the event will surely be a fun time. The use of Double Battles means that two non-Legendary Pokemon will be on the field at all times, so some strategies that are useful in normal competitive play may also carry over here. This will also be a fun last hurrah for the small slate of Legendary Pokemon currently available. The upcoming Crown Tundra DLC brings every Legendary Pokemon back, so some currently-powerful Legendaries may not fare so well if another Battle of Legends tournament rolls around.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are now available for the Nintendo Switch.
