PlayStation fans have been scrambling for Sony to release more news about their upcoming console. This call for new updates only got more intense when Microsoft finally announced the price for the Xbox Series X. As if to fulfill the wishes of its fanbase, Sony held a showcase event September 16, and lo and behold, some of the things the fans have been calling for have finally been revealed.
In the days leading up to the event, there were quite a few rumors and leaks on what would be announced at the showcase. Some of them were true, some of them weren’t—or at least, not yet.
9 True: The Price Would Be Announced
Weeks before the PS5 showcase event, Microsoft finally unveiled the prices of their upcoming next-gen consoles. It would only make sense for Sony to then follow suit. A lot of people believed this would really be the case and Sony delivered. On September 16, Sony finally announced the prices from the PS5 and its digital edition.
The PS5 will cost players $499.99 while the digital edition will come at $399.99. Amazingly, on top of predicting that the prices of the consoles will be announced, many actually predicted how much both consoles would cost exactly.
8 False: Uncharted Sequel
A few days before the showcase event, a lot of rumors circulated around the internet that a new Uncharted title would be announced. More specifically, an Uncharted title that would revolve around Sam Drake. Rumors and speculations regarding a new Uncharted title aren’t exactly recent. Fans of the series and speculators have always believed that Naughty Dog will eventually announce a new title that will tie in with the main series, and Sam Drake will most likely be the main protagonist this time. Others also believe it will revolve around Victor Sullivan instead and a new title will explore more of his backstory. Whatever the case, Uncharted was nowhere to be seen in the showcase event.
7 True: Final Fantasy XVI
One of the biggest rumors to reach the internet over the past couple of weeks was the announcement of a new Final Fantasy game. A now-deleted tweet by a Square Enix producer only sparked this rumor even more. When the showcase event finally went live, fans were looking forward for this rumor to finally bear fruition, and it did.
The very first game announced was indeed a new Final Fantasy title. It’s been four years since the last Final Fantasy game. Given how active this series is, it’s not really a surprise that gamers will be blessed with a new one come the new consoles.
6 False: The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer
Fans were excited for Naughty Dog to finally announce the successor to Last of Us‘ Factions multiplayer mode. The PS5 showcase event seemed like the perfect place to announce such an anticipated and major feature. Sadly, The Last of Us 2 Factions, or whatever they’re planning to call the multiplayer mode, was a no show. It’s highly likely that this multiplayer mode will arrive for gamers eventually. Leaks and insider rumors all point towards this being true. When it’s going to be announced, though, is still yet to be seen.
5 True: Demon’s Souls Gameplay
The announcement of a Demon’s Souls remake was one of the highlights of the showcase event. Fans loved how polished it looked, and the opportunity to re-play such a beloved title on a more powerful console was widely anticipated. When a new showcase event was announced, a lot of people hoped to see more of the Demon’s Souls remake, perhaps even see actual gameplay of it. Thankfully, Sony delivered.
There were a lot of rumors that this was actually going to happen, and it looks like they were right. Fans finally got their first glimpse of the actual Demon’s Souls gameplay, which is only understandable considering the game is expected to be a launch title for the PS5.
4 False: Silent Hill
Perhaps one of the most disappointing things about the showcase event was the absence of the widely anticipated Silent Hill title. For months, many fans have been expecting an announcement of this particular title when rumors started going around that Sony and Konami were working together to create an exclusive title for the PS5.
Many were disappointed when Silent Hill was absent from the previous showcase event, so they were hoping it would finally be announced on September 16. While we don’t know for sure yet if Sony and Konami are indeed working on a title together, players are more than excited for this to actually be true.
3 True: Spider-Man: Miles Morales Gameplay
There were various rumors and leaks regarding Spider-Man: Miles Morales leading up to the showcase event. The leaks stated that fans would finally get the first glimpse of actual gameplay, and thank goodness those rumors ended up being true.
While the gameplay is very similar to its predecessor, it also offers new mechanics that pay respect to Miles’ more unique abilities. The gameplay showcase also showed off the game’s story too, which is an even bigger surprise. Needless to say, fans of Spider-Man were very happy about this reveal.
2 False: PS5 UI Reveal
A lot of leakers and supposed-reliable sources have stated that Sony will reveal the PS5 UI to the public for the first time during the showcase event. Much to the dismay of those leakers, and to the ones who were looking forward to this particular rumor, that didn’t happen. PlayStation fans have still yet to see what the upcoming console’s UI will actually look like. According to Sony themselves, the UI will look “really cool” and fans will get to see it soon. Sadly, the time for that wasn’t at the latest PS5 showcase event.
1 True: God of War: Ragnarok Announcement
Just when everyone thought the showcase was over, Sony dropped a bombshell on the viewers and officially announced God of War: Ragnarok, sequel to 2018’s God of War. Fans erupted and leakers rejoiced. There were indeed rumors and leaks that circulated around the web weeks prior to the event, saying that a new God of War game was going to be announced.
It turns out those leaks were correct, right down to the subtitle. The announcement also included the year of release, which will be 2021. Needless to say, fans of the game and series have much to look forward to next year.
