Warner Bros. is officially working on a new feature adaptation of a comic book series, but not one of their typical heroes. Instead they’ve chosen to adapt Black, a comic created by Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3, set in a world where only Black people have superpowers. Though the film project was originally announced in 2018 in collaboration with Studio 8, only now has Warner Bros. decided to come on board.
The original concept for the comic originated over 10 years ago, but finally came into fruition via a Kickstarter that raised over $90,000. Overall the comic has been well received by general audiences and backers, and the success of the Kickstarted book eventually led to the decision to film a complete film based on the concept. Though not many details about the project are available, it is known that Studio 8 will be produce with Osajyefo and Smith serving as co-producers.
Osajyefo created the story as a response to a lack of representation in comics publishing, and was grateful for the opportunity to bring the story to a wider audience. While discussing his inspiration, he stated: “For most of comics’ history, white outcasts have been used as allegories for marginalized groups while claiming to reflect the world outside our window. Black strips away this veneer to juxtapose superpowers with race while allowing black people to see ourselves authentically in media and inviting wider audiences into parts of our experience. We’re excited to bring this story to everyone through film, and thankful to Studio 8 for believing in it.”
As a concept, the world and story of Black are sure to inspire a lot of discussion and debate, but the basic synopsis doesn’t give much away. “One young man survives a violent event and realizes that he is part of these extraordinary people, but a secret consortium wants to control these abilities and those who possess them, and he soon finds himself at the center of a war over the future of mankind itself.” So, in other words, it’s a superhero story. If the film can deliver on the premise and the success of the comic, it could be something very interesting indeed.
