One year after the release of Borderland 3, Gearbox is still treating fans to DLC updates that add whole new aspects to the space-set satirical shooter. Gearbox has announced a new game mode called Arms Race that is said to make the game feel like a completely new experience.
For fans wondering when future DLC might be scheduled to drop, there’s a pattern in Borderlands 3’s DLC which gives a hint as to when to expect this new content. Players may still have a little while to wait, but if Gearbox continues this pattern, they can have a good idea of when–and what–they’re waiting for.
Borderlands 3 has released DLC around every 3 months since its release. Borderlands 3 released in September 2019. On November 14, Gearbox announced Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot, which was released on December 19, 2019. This piece of DLC took fans back to a fan-favorite villain, or more accurately, what he’d left behind in raiding Handsome Jack’s space casino while fighting off hordes of enemies.
March 26, 2020 saw the release of the second DLC campaign, Guns, Love and Tentacles. This downloadable story campaign focused on the characters Sir Alistair Hammerlock and Wainwright Jakobs getting married, with the Vault Hunters were invited. They planet they choose for their destination wedding, however, turns out to be the home of a violent cult with a Lovecraftian vibe. Meanwhile, Bounty of Blood released on June 25, 2020, and put a western-style spin on the looter-shooter as the Vault Hunters had to protect the town of Vestige from a gang called the Devil Riders.
Finally, Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck brought things full circle with a September 10 release date, having been announced back in August. The DLC saw scientist Patricia Tannis attempt to study the psychos of Pandora and search for a mysterious concept know only as Vaulthalla. The Vault Hunters are tasked with entering the mind of Krieg, the playable psycho class character in Borderlands 2, and unlocking the secrets of his mind.
This makes it very likely that fans can expect the new Arms Race game mode for Borderlands 3 and the accompanying new skill trees to drop in December 2020. As for the content of the new mode itself, more of the details about Arms Race will likely be dropped in October of this year, though there are already some details that have been hinted at by Gearbox.
The idea of Arms Race is to make the many guns that the Borderlands series is famous for matter in a whole new way. How exactly that will be realized remains to be seen. Further, Vault hunters will also be getting a 4th skill tree each, and though these are not part of the Season Pass, it seems like Gearbox is wanting to deliver on both quality and quantity.
The full details on the exact nature of the DLC will be released sometime soon on the Borderlands Show. While fans will still have to be patient a little longer, they can be relatively confident that the next Borderlands 3 DLC will be dropping before the end of the year.
Borderlands 3 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are in development.
