Borderlands 3 players are in an interesting spot right now when it comes to new content. With the season pass complete but next gen versions of the game on the way, how exactly Borderlands 3 will be expanded upon going forward is a bit unclear. One bit of DLC content promised by Gearbox is a brand-new game mode, a first for the series, and the developer has finally provided some details as to what it could be like.
Originally teased by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford last month, the game mode has been officially titled Arms Race. In an interview with GameSpot, the talkative CEO of Gearbox shared that he “cannot wait until [we can] share more about this, until people can experience it.” Pitchford went on to say that the mode “changes everything”, even making the incredibly bold claim that Arms Race can be considered “a totally new game” because it is such a change to the usual Borderlands formula.
With the mode being a true chance for Borderlands 3 to do something new, Gearbox will hopefully live up to the hype built up by Randy Pitchford. Gearbox teased that the mode will take place “in its own unique environment”, indicating that a new location will be added along with Arms Race. Interestingly enough, while Pitchford stated that the mode will not be a battle royale, he believes fans of Call of Duty: Warzone will enjoy the new mode due to its focus on “making every gun matter in a unique way.”
A Borderlands 3 game mode focused on the game’s many weapons makes sense, though details are still scarce regarding the mode despite these small shreds of information. Pitchford and Gearbox confirmed that more official information on the Arms Race mode will come later this month, with a potential release near the end of the year. With a report saying that Arms Race is just part of the next Borderlands 3 DLC, it could potentially launch with the skill tree DLC for the current vault hunters.
As for what can be played right now in Borderlands 3, Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck has only been out for a few weeks. While hardcore players have found many of the expansion’s secrets, including a hidden room within DLC 4’s Vaulthalla, there could easily still be more to find. For players who have completed everything, though, replaying content until Arms Race and the new skill trees arrive seems like the only option available as of now. With plenty of Borderlands fans hungry for more content, hopefully Gearbox delivers the new mode and abilities sooner rather than later.
Players who missed out on the original Borderlands 3 Bloody Harvest will be glad to hear that it is returning next week, though it is unclear whether the event is bringing new goodies with it or not. Regardless, the Halloween update will likely be the last content released for Borderlands 3 for a few months, with Arms Race and all its potential still sounding like it is a good bit away.
Borderlands 3 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X upgrades are also in development.
