Far Cry 6 is one of the most anticipated games of 2021. Apart from being an established open-world FPS franchise that innovates by combining the two genres, the Far Cry series also possesses some of the most compelling and moral-driving villains in gaming. This makes every Far Cry a narrative journey on top of the immersive survival experience.
Gameplay-wise, Far Cry has made some vast changes to its core mechanics across its different titles. As a result, Far Cry, although holding onto that Far Cry formula, still manages to feel fresh with every release. Taking place in a Cuban-inspired setting, Far Cry 6 focuses on a revolutionary movement looking to overthrow the charismatic dictator, El Presidente, Anton Castillo.
10 Ghost Recon Wildlands
Also made by Ubisoft, Far Cry 6 may have a very similar feel to the Bolivian-set Ghost Recon Wildlands. Just like Far Cry 6, Wildlands allows players to side with guerilla rebels who make use with what little resources they have to wage an uprising against the heavily armed drug cartel. Wildlands, like other games following the Ubisoft formula, also allows players to clear outposts and complete various side quests to liberate the different provinces across the map.
To top it off, Wildlands also possesses a complete character customization option from gender selection to tailoring his/her looks; just like how Far Cry 6 teases to be. Gameplay, narrative, and experience-wise, Wildlands is an amazing game to get a feel for what Far Cry 6 is shaping up to be.
9 Call Of Duty: Black Ops
The first game in the Black Ops lineup is a classic story-driven FPS where missions take place in rural and barren maps. This action-packed game, though it may not be of the open-world genre, possesses the fast-paced gameplay of most Far Cry games.
An iconic mission in Black Ops is where players ride a high-powered motorcycle with Resnov in an epic conclusion to the Vorkuta prison escape; the same rush one gets when mowing down enemies with a vehicle in Far Cry games. At the climax of Black Ops, the players lay siege against a ship headed to Cuba. Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro is also mentioned in the game, giving Black Ops some heavy uprising tones.
8 Rust
Rust is a first-person survival game where players start off with nothing. Not even clothes. In Rust, players loot stuff and scraps they find in the world, craft weapons, make clothes and weapons for themselves, and build a shelter. It’s basically Minecraft’s 16-year-old cousin.
This works similarly to the Far Cry games wherein players are left lost and abandoned in the middle of nowhere by the plot, starting them off with the most basic of weapons and abilities. Players work their way up to higher-tier loot and equipment until they become the most unstoppable force on the map. This prey-to-predator climb can be very well expected with the upcoming Far Cry 6.
7 Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag
Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag is an open-world game that takes place in the tropical islands of the Caribbean. Players sail the seas with each location separated by vast waters, allowing for much naval exploration and onslaught.
Because Black Flag is a Ubisoft game, players will see a lot of common elements between this Assassin’s Creed game and the Far Cry franchise. The setting is also close to Far Cry 6’s Cuban setting, albeit in a much earlier age, with its bright tropical areas and outposts riddled with enemies.
6 Half-Life 2
With Far Cry 6 looking to be a promising addition to the FPS market, it’s worth looking at one of the staples in the genre, Half-Life 2. This Valve-produced game is an adventure puzzle platformer that allows players to pick up anything and everything in the world to use as weapons, or as leverage in a sticky situation. Half-Life 2’s world is filled with non-stationary set pieces that serve as more than backdrops.
They are actual props players can pick up, allowing them limitless creativity when approaching puzzles. Despite there being a ton of weapons in the game, players can do much with just a crowbar. This makes Half-Life 2 a must-play while waiting for Far Cry 6, seeing that the franchise is also known for its platformer/puzzle side quests.
5 Watch Dogs 2
Another Ubisoft game, Watch Dogs 2 shares a lot of the gameplay and exploration mechanics of Far Cry while borrowing from Rockstar’s GTA playbook. The plot of Watch Dogs 2 revolves around a group of young talented hackers looking to overthrow the invasive tech giants who, through the city’s operating system, steal data and prey on their consumers.
The fun-loving group of Dedsec best resembles the ambitious guerilla groups across Far Cry games with a similar goal in their respective games– to overthrow the powerful governing body. Like Far Cry 6, co-op is also possible in Watch Dogs 2, emulating a very similar experience while players wait for the game to come out.
4 Red Dead Redemption 2
Though Red Dead Redemption 2 is intended to be more of an open-world adventure game, there’s no denying that the life-like mechanics of RDR2 makes for an unparalleled survival game experience as well. Unlike the instant crafting, looting, and upgrading most games have, RDR2 implements realistic and tedious animations that make looting enemies after a bloody massacre feels like a chore on its own.
Even harvesting animal parts greets players with a glorious skinning animation. Hunger and temperature are huge player drawbacks in RDR2, and players must combat it by hunting or looting for food and wearing appropriate winter gear. Playing RDR2 gives an overkill glimpse of what survival mechanics Far Cry 6 may implement.
3 Battlefield 1
Another staple in the FPS market, Battlefield 1 is a massively multiplayer game set in WW1, deep in the trenches and crossfire. A central element of the Battlefield games is its large open maps and various weaponized vehicles that can turn the tides of the battle. Much like how the vehicles in the Far Cry games can slaughter hordes of enemies before being shot to a smoking pulp.
Far Cry prides itself on vehicular chaos in its games that allows players to ride shotgun with a shotgun. In that regard, Battlefield 1 is a game that implements weaponized vehicles, along with a realistic first-person perspective. This EA game can be played while waiting for Far Cry 6’s release.
2 Far Cry 3
While waiting for Far Cry 6, the obvious best game to play would be one of the Far Cry games. Far Cry 3 is arguably the best game in the franchise due to its passionate and moving villain, Vaas Montenegro. This, coupled with the lost castaway experience the game provides along with the long tedious climb to become the island’s most powerful warrior, is the definition of the Far Cry formula.
It is Far Cry 3 that has blessed the gaming industry with one of the most iconic scenes in gaming — Vaas’ insanity speech. However, given the constantly changing formula of the franchise, playing just Far Cry 3 isn’t enough to fully embrace the essence of Far Cry.
1 Far Cry 5
Far Cry 5 takes place in rural America; particularly Hope County, Montanna. A religious cult has taken over the area and is inducting the locals by force and oppression. Though Far Cry 6 seems to resemble Far Cry 4 better since both their stories involve a dictator as the main villain, Far Cry 5 is more similar to the promising sequel in terms of gameplay mechanics.
Far Cry 5 allows players to fully customize their character, along with the option for various companions to aid the players in the revolution. In addition, vehicles are more on-demand in FC5 than they are in FC4. This game is also miles different from Far Cry 3, so it’s worth trying them both in anticipation of the sixth main installment.
