Despite years since first hitting the gaming scene, the battle royale genre continues to dominate. Publisher EA’s answer to the trend was Apex Legends, which still stands as one of the more popular options. After Apex Legends became a great hit with players, developer Respawn Entertainment continued to support the title with new content updates. With Respawn confirming that the cross-play beta launches in a few days, some fans are wondering where the port announced alongside it is.
It was back in June that Respawn Entertainment confirmed at the EA Play event that Apex Legends is coming to the Nintendo Switch. Since that initial announcement, fans have received little updates as to when they will be able to play Apex Legends on the go. With the added incentive of cross-play, fans are looking for any kind of news on the Switch port.
After a long silence on the matter, Switch players looking forward to the title now have an update from Respawn Entertainment. Apex Legends director Chad Grenier was answering questions regarding cross-play on Twitter when one fan brought up the Switch version. After a player queried the notable absence of any information about the Switch port in the most recent Apex Legends blog post, Grenier gave a short response. Grenier simply said that “We are still working on it. Can’t say more.”
This update from Grenier doesn’t provide much in the way of information regarding the upcoming port. Grenier’s tweet simply confirms that the port has not been “dumped.” It’s likely that the announcement of the release of Apex Legends on the Switch will come through one of the Nintendo’s numerous Directs. It wouldn’t be all that surprising to see it have a surprise release during a Nintendo Partner showcase.
For fans, the lack of any update on the Switch version is disheartening. Many had assumed that considering the announcements were made together, the Switch version would launch alongside cross-play. As indicated through the recent blog post, this is not the case. What may make the continued wait for the Switch port easier is that Apex Legends will not feature cross-progression between platforms. There are rumors that Apex Legends could have cross-progression later down the line, possibly after the cross-play beta according to dataminers.
So with Apex Legends cross-play beta coming next week, the requests for update on the Switch port are likely to ramp up. While Apex Legends isn’t quite at the same height of popularity it hit last year, the introduction of cross-play may just be the shot in the arm the player base needs.
Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version currently in development.
