A short video on Reddit’s r/PS5 subreddit appears to show an unannounced controller and the startup screen for the PlayStation 5. Although of course unconfirmed, the leak aligns with some of what Sony has recently shown audiences.
Excitement surrounding the PlayStation 5 has reached new heights following a disorganized pre-order process that left many without a PS5 at launch. As some continue to comb through rumors of more pre-orders launching, they may want to see if getting the console at launch is really worth all the effort. For its part, Sony has revealed a large number of exciting games coming during the PS5 launch window, but some key features are still shrouded in mystery. Chief among them is the console’s user interface.
The leak from Reddit user u/wsb_BernieMadoff shows a black DualSense controller with white buttons. Then, a startup sequence for the PS5 appears, with glowing particles against a black background. Some text appears during this sequence, but in Russian. Comments in the Reddit indicate the text is standard safety information. The startup screen aligns with Sony’s official startup screen reveal, adding legitimacy to the leak. Unfortunately, the video cuts out at the startup screen, denying viewers a glimpse at the console’s user interface.
The DualSense wireless controller has only so far been revealed in a white variant, so this would be the first alternate controller. A black DualSense controller with white buttons leaked early in August; although both that leak and this one are unconfirmed, they seem to align well with each other. As the PS5 seems to have only white DualSense controllers bundled with the console, this suggests Sony will find ways to incentivize buying additional controllers down the road.
According to comments in the Reddit thread, a conversation takes place in the background regarding the PS5 HD camera accessory. This does not reveal any new information, but instead highlights a few things about the accessory that we already know. In particular, the camera’s two lenses will be used like a smartphone portrait mode – a way of adding streamers into game streams that eliminates background elements. This was a long-rumored addition to the PS5, so it’s no surprise that people would want to talk about it.
It’s very important to take this leak with a grain of salt. Of course, it could simply be a fake. It would not be hard to craft a convincing fake DualSense controller with enough time and effort. Plus, even if it is real, the controller may come from a pre-release devkit. Although the PS5 devkit looks very different from a PS5, the Reddit video does not show the console itself. This leaves open the possibility that the controller, while real, is a prototype of sorts that was never intended for public release. In any case, players will learn more when the console releases on November 12th in select regions worldwide.
