The day that many thought would never come, finally has, as Steve from Minecraft has been announced as a fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In a new video, Director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that not only did Nintendo rework every stage to accommodate Steve, but that there will also be a stage recreating the world of Minecraft, fittingly titled Minecraft World. Now it has been confirmed how many variations the stage will have.
Many stages in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have multiple forms or variations, outside of the Omega and Battlefield versions every stage has. For example, the stage that accompanied DLC character Byleth allows players to traverse over multiple areas from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. So, the confirmation of multiple variations of Minecraft World fits it right in with the rest of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate stages.
It turns out Minecraft World will feature six biomes: Plains, Birch Forest, Savanna, Taiga, Snowy Tundra and Stone Shore. And having more than just cosmetic differences, each biome features a different layout as well. Even though many stages have variations, 6 is still a lot, which is to be expected given how many years this addition has been in the works.
All the stages have destructible blocks that do not regenerate. The Plains biome features a day/night cycle that will have working villagers during the day, and zombies stalking about at night. As is Minecraft tradition, the zombies burn up upon daylight. The Birch Forest and Savanna biomes have trees that can be destroyed to reveal permanent platforms and the Snowy Tundra area features an igloo. Director Masahiro Sakurai explained the careful attention to detail Nintendo put into making sure the stone blocks contained the most iron, just like real Minecraft.
Minecraft also opens up the door even farther to perhaps one of the most requested third-party characters, Master Chief from the Halo franchise. Minecraft, along with previous DLC fighter Banjo and Kazooie, are both owned by publisher Microsoft, who also happens to own Halo. Having a major flagship character like Master Chief from Xbox would leave Super Smash Bros. Ultimate just a flagship Sony character, like say Nathan Drake from being the absolute ultimate mascot brawler. It seems Microsoft is all for it as well.
Apparently Minecraft isn’t the only block-based-franchise that wanted into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as it turns out Tetris has begun lobbying to make it into the game.
