Literally speaking, game file sizes have become one of the biggest problems for gamers these days, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has proven to be one of the worst offenders. A lot of players have been worried that the game would soon become too big to fit on their hard drives, and now it looks like that worst-case scenario is starting to play out.
The game has grown pretty much non-stop since it dropped a year ago, with subsequent post-launch seasons introducing plenty of new maps, modes, weapons, and customization options, as well as the game’s massive battle royale offshoot Call of Duty: Warzone. All of this content has bloated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare‘s file size to the point that it can no longer fit on a 250GB external SSD.
Word of this came from BattleNonSense on Twitter this weekend. They shared a screenshot of their PC screen showing their failed attempt at trying to load the game onto an SSD. A few replies have noted that a recent update has reduced the game’s file size a little, meaning BattleNonSense should be able to fit the game on the SSD by reinstalling it. As they pointed out, though, that would only solve the problem until the game receives another massive update, which is possible given the likelihood of Modern Warfare Season 7 happening.
This is a problem that players have long been anticipating, and for months there have been calls for Activision and Infinity Ward to cut Modern Warfare’s file size. BattleNonSense joined in by asking the publisher and developer to split up the game’s single-player, multiplayer, and battle royale components into separate pieces, that way players can remove the ones they don’t play and free up some much-needed storage space in the process, a system many players use on consoles.
At the rate games are growing going into the next console generation, such a feature may become necessary for gamers who don’t want all of their storage space being taken up by a few massive titles. Luckily, it’s long been rumored that next-gen consoles will support this kind of modular game storage, and this week Microsoft confirmed that the Xbox Series X will include a modular storage option.
With any luck, the problem of Modern Warfare’s excessive file size will be limited to just Modern Warfare, but there are already worrying signs that its successor, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, might be just as bad, or worse. That’s because it’s been confirmed that Black Ops Cold War will be approximately 100GB at launch, so unless Treyarch is able to manage update sizes better, players might not be able to fit all of that game onto their PCs or consoles after a while.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
