The Payday franchise has become a cult classic, with many fans patiently waiting for info on Payday 3 for some time now. Today, they finally got their wish, and the news regarding the development progress being made on Payday 3 is sure to please many fans.
Within a post on the official Twitter account for the series, the Payday 3 developers gave an update on how far into development the next heist-focused FPS is. The tweet remains in character of the “Payday Twitter Man” while still providing new details and reiterating facts such as the game’s official confirmation. According to the tweet, the game has exited the planning phase of development and Starbreeze is starting the design process.
The tweet also confirms the use of the Unreal Engine, news that should be welcome to the dedicated fans of the series. While there is some charm to Payday 2’s dated Diesel 2.0 engine, it undeniably comes with issues that an engine change can fix. Swapping to Unreal should mean less clunky shooting mechanics and better visuals, bringing more detail to the environments and the masks worn by those carrying out the heist. With awesome fan creations showing the power of Unreal, the third Payday game making use of the engine is exciting news.
The tweets other big bullet point is a release date, with the developers opting to list “TBA” as opposed to a specific year for Payday 3’s release window. With COVID-19 still greatly impacting video game development across the industry and other issues always possibly arising during game creation, Starbreeze is smart to avoid providing fans with a date that they cannot stick to. While fans do not know when exactly the game is coming, a 2022 to 2023 release window for Payday 3 is likely.
With the game so far off, Payday fans will likely continue to play the second game in the series. Payday 2 has seen consistently active players since its release back in 2013, an impressive feat considering the game’s age. With so few games focused solely on heists and pulling off crimes, Payday corners the market and does well because of it, with an active player base over seven years since the game’s release showing that. The game’s consistent DLC updates certainly help too, with Payday 2 getting fresh content as recently as July.
This news on the development of Payday 3 is certainly a bit more positive than the story on Starbreeze’s former CEO being convicted of insider trading from earlier this year. Fans may not know when the game is coming, but at least now they know it will be using a new engine and is getting further along in its development process.
Payday 3 is currently in development.
