The dichotomy of a golf course on a beautiful and relaxing locale with the difficulties and challenges of a wonderfully designed course is part of what makes golf special, and PGA TOUR 2K21 attempted to do this with its launch earlier this year. PGA 2K21 has seen updates since it first launched, but thus far, new courses have not been added to the game. That could change sometime in the near future.
Shaun West, Senior Producer of PGA TOUR 2K21, recently sat down with Game Rant to discuss the game, the newest update, and more post-launch content that one day may arrive. One of the things discusses was the idea of new official/licensed courses. The game launched with 15 official courses, such as TPC Sawgrass, Atlantic Beach Country Club, and Copperhead Course (which happens to be West’s favorite course). But moving forward, it would be nice to see some more courses added to the game, including incredibly historical ones, more PGA TOUR courses, and even newer courses that are high-rated (even if not on the PGA TOUR quite yet).
Considered by many as the birthplace of the sport, St. Andrews opened up in 1754 as the Royal and Ancient Club, later being known as the Society of St. Andrews Golfers. Home to The Open, which will see its 150th tournament in 2022, the links course is the definition of Scottish golf. The par 72 course is as historical as a course and club as it is for individual holes, as the 18th is one of the most iconic in the game. Being able to enjoy the gorgeous open fields, the impeccable course design, and the history of the sport in PGA TOUR 2K212 would be wonderful. In our interview with West, he mentioned St. Andrews before anything, saying, “it would be incredible to add.”
Speaking of history, Augusta National Golf Club is oozing with it. Of the four majors in the PGA TOUR, the Masters is the only one that never moves in terms of which course it is played on. It always takes place on historic Augusta. The course was built in 1932 and features a gorgeous arrangement of bunkers, pine trees, and flowery arrangements. Augusta is also the home of Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, who have downed the Green Jacket (awarded to the winner) six and four times respectively. When speaking of these courses, West he doesn’t “think there are any right or wrong answers picking from that list because they are all amazing.”
The nice thing about the deep user-generated content via the Course Designer in PGA TOUR 2K21 is that fans do their best to recreate popular courses from around the world. But having them added as official courses, then placed within the online playlist or perhaps even updated into the Career Mode and things of that nature, would be splendid.
Pebble Beach may be the first to come to mind for many. It just celebrated its 100the birthday, as it was designed in 1919. The links course is stunning visually, as it looks over the Pacific Ocean on the white beaches of California. It’s a bucket list type golf course for many, as anyone from a Happy Gilmore’s Shooter McGavin to the average Sunday afternoon golfer would likely appreciate the view and design of the course.
Another excellent addition would be Torrey Pines, a course that West specifically mentioned in our interview with him. Another California course that looks over the Pacific Ocean, it holes are uniquely designed up on top of cliffsides. A bit newer, compared to the other courses thus far, Torrey Pines was created in 1957 in Camp Callan, a U.S. Army installation during World War 2.
LPGA International is a golf club in Daytona Beach, Florida. It was created established in 1994, as the Ladies Professional Golf Association was looking for a new headquarters during that time. Either or both of the two courses, Jones and Hills, would excellent additions to the game. Although there are no LPGA professionals in the PGA 2K21, players can create either Male or Female golfers as their MyPlayer. An update that would add a few LPGA players to the game, and the LPGA International, would be a welcome piece of post-launch content.
Golf is such a historical sport, with the likes of the aforementioned St. Andrews or Augusta, that newer and amazing courses can sometimes be left out of video games. It could be very exciting to see some of the highest-rated courses that were made in the past decade. Congaree in Ridgeland, S.C., Sand Valley in Nekoosa, Wisconson, and Dismal River Club in Mullen, Nebraska are all highly rated courses that may end up being a part of the PGA TOUR sometimes soon.
Shaun West was excited to suggest adding Cabot Links (and Cabot Cliffs) as a course that would be fun to bring to PGA TOUR 2K21. As HB Studios (the team behind this well-received PGA 2K21) is located in Nova Scotia, it would be nice to add the local course to the game. According to West, the Inverness, Nova Scotia course is “one of the top-rated course in Canada and it’s in the top 100 in the world.”
There are over 38,000 golf courses in 209 countries across the world, whether big or small, whether on the TOUR or local hidden treasures. PGA TOUR 2K21 cannot possibly hold them all, except if one were to consider the Course Designer, where fans work hard at making their own creations or replicating the course in their own backyard. But as far as courses designed by West and his team, it is possible that they may add more TOUR-level courses and less-known courses to PGA TOUR 2K21.
PGA TOUR 2K21 is out now on PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, Xbox One.
