With the hype continuing to build for the upcoming launches of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, gamers are learning more about the machines competing for their attention and dollars. With a significant leap in performance comes an inevitable leap in hardware size, but a new video shows just how big the hardware size leap could be for PlayStation 5 owners.
You Tuber Gamer Snack has used an augmented reality likeness of the PlayStation 5, which appears to be based on the official dimensions shared by Sony, and created a video where the virtual console is compared in size to a prototype Xbox Series X and a PlayStation 4. For any gamers still unsure as to the size of the new consoles, the video leaves no doubt as to the sheer amount of space required, especially for anyone who is considering buying both machines.
While the Xbox Series X is a fairly large console, the vertically standing AR PlayStation 5 makes it look tiny, being considerably taller and deeper, and only slightly less wide at its biggest point. The video shows both of the disc drives as comparably sized, which suggests that the comparison is a fair one, especially given that PlayStation 5 is already known to be the biggest console in modern gaming history. The direct comparison starts at 7 minutes and 19 seconds.
Although the AR likeness of the PlayStation 5 may not be exactly the same as the actual final console, it doesn’t appear to be far off given the official sizes already released by Sony. However it should be noted that the version shown in AR is the larger disc based console, and includes the optional stand that raises the height a little. Given that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X contain comparable hardware, it is yet to be fully understood why the former is significantly bigger, although Sony have hinted at customization options, and confirmed the ability to upgrade storage – which could explain some of the sizing choices.
With a vertical height of 39 cm, the PlayStation 5 appears remarkably close to some mid-tower PCs in size. However, if the console can provide great performance and an attractive array of exclusive games, the size is unlikely to matter in the long term. As in past generations, it is highly likely that a reduced size version of the console will appear in the future to increase its appeal.
Whether PlayStation 5 lives up the big hype and big AR sizing remains to be seen. Gamers won’t have to wait long to ultimately find out as the console launches on November 12th in the U.S. and several other countries, for the price of $499 or $399 for the Digital Edition.
PlayStation 5 is available for limited pre-orders now.
