Almost one year since its first trailer was released, Ryan Reynolds’ upcoming Free Guy finally showed a second official trailer showcasing a slightly deeper look into its open world game comedy plot. Despite even more recent delays throughout the entire movie industry, the promotional feature stills shows December 11 as its target release date.
The trailer was simultaneously uploaded to both 20th Century Studios and Ryan Reynolds’ YouTube channels, but of course, over on Reynolds’ side, there was also a funny bit dropped the day before titled “Trailer Tomorrow. Probably.”, where the cast and director Shawn Levy can be seen in a Zoom call joking around the uncertainty around the film’s premiere. Taika Waititi, set to play the main villain, is absent from the call, probably due to his incredibly busy schedule.
Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudakar and Taika Waititi, is the story of Guy, an average NPC bank teller living inside the world of a fictional video game called “Free City” that looks like mixture of Grand Theft Auto with a dash of Fortnite.
Despite its very specific premise, Reynolds and Levy have made it clear that the movie is not only suited for video game fans, much in the same way sports movies are not necessarily about sports. Instead, the game and surrounding culture are the means to tell a story that finds it easier to exploit its comedic root and effects. Humor shouldn’t be a problem, given Reynolds’ social media presence and advertising prowess rely on his comedic gifts.
If the success of movies like Wreck-It Ralph and Ready Player One is anything to judge by, video game themed movies can definitely be very successful from a critical and commercial standpoint, while paying respect to source material and culture. When exactly audiences will get to judge on that will have to wait since, as the cast sums it, it could be this Christmas, New Year, Valentine’s Day or “Halloween, but not the one that you think”.
Free Guy is scheduled for release on December 11th.
