A demo of Baronnerie Games’ newest title, Breach Wanderers, will be available for free via Steam starting tomorrow. This card-based roguelike plays very much like Slay the Spire at first blush, but the emphasis on creative deck building from the very start encourages players to find their unique play style.
The Montreal-based company is going to be holding a stream tomorrow, Wednesday, October 7th, at 10 AM PST (5 PM UTC) to celebrate the launch. The developers will be answering players’ questions while they are playing the demo. The 55-second trailer features turn-based play with cards displaying a full range of beautiful artwork and unique monsters to use them against, but no word on whether there is a campaign story.

The wonderful thing about roguelike games is they are endlessly replayable, simply because the core randomness mechanic that makes a game a roguelike means a player is unlikely to encounter the same scenario twice, at least not without dying and starting over with the same seed. Card-based roguelikes are relatively rare, so it’s neat to see a new one come on to the market.
There are two confirmed playable main characters: Mirley sports a pair of daggers and holds herself in a light-footed, roguish stance perfect for sneaking, while Silan is armored in plate mail and he brandishes what appears to be a rather large and sharp-edged energy cannon. Players will be encouraged to be creative when they build their 10-card deck of abilities and find a build suitable to their unique play style.
Baronnerie Games has its work cut out for it, since Breach Wanderers will have to display quite a bit of innovation to stand out in today’s market versus other indie roguelikes. The developers’ philosophy is encouraging, with a focus on open-ended gameplay, giving players challenges to overcome and the tools they’ll need to succeed.
The stream will be viewable through Steam and Twitch.
The demo for Breach Wanderers will be available to play on PC on October 7th, 2020.
