As popular as Overwatch is, a lot of people have passed on playing it due to the number of high-profile games that are either available for less or fully free-to-play. It’s been argued that the game would benefit from following suit, and there have been a few rumors of Overwatch possibly going free-to-play. Today, it was revealed that those rumors will soon become real, at least for a little while.
Nintendo has announced that the Switch version of the hero-shooter is the next game that will be available as part of Nintendo Switch Online’s Game Trial program. This means that, starting next week, all of Overwatch’s characters, modes, and maps, will be available to subscribers for free, allowing them to play as much as they want while the trial lasts.
Going into specifics, the company says that the trial will begin next Tuesday, October 13, and will end on October 20 at 11:59 PM PST. As with the free weekends for Overwatch that Blizzard Entertainment has held throughout the years, new players will be able to keep all of the progress they make. That way, once the trial ends, they can continue from where they left off if they decide to buy the game.
The free trial comes as fans of the game are waiting for the release of Overwatch 2, which is also coming to the Switch alongside other platforms. As of this writing, it’s still unknown when exactly it will come out, but it’s been recently rumored that Overwatch 2 may launch in 2021. Should that prove to be true, any new fans brought in by the Switch trial won’t have to wait long for new content.
Overwatch is available for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
