Sometimes changes made in online games can have unforeseeable consequences. Such is the case with a recent change made in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare‘s recent Season 6 update, which crossed over with Call of Duty: Warzone. The specific change in Modern Warfare/Warzone‘s September 28 update nerfed C4 usage severely. The consequences of the nerf have been leading to problems for many Warzone players, in particular, ever since. Luckily, it doesn’t seem like it really needs to be fixed, either.
The specific patch note that’s causing Warzone players so much of a problem is as follows: “C4: Slight delay when performing a quick detonation. A beep will now play when quick detonation is triggered. Also reduced throw initial velocity by 30%.” The problem from the developer’s view was that too many players were using C4 in a way that was never really intended. Good Warzone players could chuck C4 in front of them or around an obstacle and explode the C4 extremely quickly, resulting in a near-instant kill. That’s not exactly fair gameplay.
As for the consequences, imagine a ton of Warzone players who have grown acclimated to using the C4 in certain combat scenarios. Sometimes it’s a duel, sometimes it’s a battle against a vehicle, or sometimes it’s their countermeasure to playing against a full squad. The quickness of the C4’s explosion turns it into a reaction, part of the player’s muscle memory. Now consider that Warzone players are no longer able to throw C4 anywhere near as far or as fast as they were before.
In so many words, a lot of Warzone players who either didn’t read the Season 6 patch notes or use C4 without thinking are blowing themselves up. They’ll try to throw the C4 at an enemy and detonate it while it’s still within range to hurt themselves. This isn’t an uncommon phenomenon; it’s happening very often, even more than a week after the patch first went live.
One example that went viral some time ago showed a show-down between to players at the end of a round of Warzone. The recording player got to watch their opponent try and throw C4 over a fence of sorts, only to blow themselves up in the process.
Before anyone takes the story of players blowing themselves up in Warzone the wrong way, no one is saying that this is a bug or that Warzone is broken. There may be some players who want the change reverted just because C4 was fun before, but it doesn’t seem like a growing sentiment. Nevertheless, it does seem to be a problem for some Warzone players, so make sure to be careful the next time anyone uses C4.
Call of Duty: Warzone is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
