Destiny 2: How to Farm Cipher Decoders for Festival of the Lost

Destiny 2‘s Festival of the Lost has arrived, and developer Bungie has added a new way to obtain loot during this iteration of the event. More specifically, players can now use Cipher Decoders, a brand new currency, to unlock bonus chests at the end of their Haunted Forest runs, giving them additional chances to procure god rolls of the Horror Story and BrayTech Werewolf assault rifles. That said, some fans may be confused about exactly how to earn Cipher Decoders in Destiny 2, and a bit of guidance may prove helpful.

To begin, players have the chance to receive Cipher Decoders upon the completion of any of the game’s activities, aside from Destiny 2‘s Haunted Forest, while wearing a mask. However, Cipher Decoders are far from guaranteed drops, and indeed players that want to amass them in large quantities will need to complete a significant number of activities during the event. As such, fans that are trying to maximize the efficiency of their Cipher Decoder farming should focus on short activities, and here is a recommendation:

At the time of writing, the fastest way to farm Cipher Decoders in Destiny 2 centers around repeatedly completing certain Patrols on the Moon. The Patrols of interest are those that instruct players to kill enemies and to find Toland, and they can be picked up in both the Anchor of Light and Archer’s Line areas. After completing a round of these activities, players should simply go into orbit and then return to Destiny 2‘s Moon to find that these Patrols have been reset.

Indeed, getting through an entire cycle of Patrols on the Moon takes almost no time at all, and while the method outlined here may feel a bit tedious, Destiny 2 fans that pursue it should accumulate Cipher Decoders fairly quickly. For those players that would like to breakup the monotony, some Heroic Story Missions are also quite short, and those could be done in between trips to the Moon. That said, fans should know that deviating from Patrols on the Moon will ultimately slow down their Cipher Decoder farming.

One final thing to say about Cipher Decoders in Destiny 2 is that Bungie has indicated that it is currently investigating their drop rates. This could mean that Cipher Decoder drop rates will be increased soon, and thus players may want to delay their farming for a few days to see if that comes to pass. However, even if Cipher Decoders become more common, Patrols on the Moon will remain the fastest activity that fans can use to farm this special Festival of the Lost currency.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
