Launching in as little over a month is the PlayStation 5 and for this generation, Sony is looking to hit the ground running with a strong launch lineup. In addition to anticipated first party titles including Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the PlayStation 5 also has a few third party console exclusives like the third person action game Godfall. Combining third person melee combat with loot, Godfall also allows players to team up and play together through online co-op. With such a big focus on the online portion, many have assumed that PlayStation Plus would be a requirement in order to play.
In response to a gameplay snippet posted on the official Godfall Twitter account, a potential buyer asked for clarification as to whether or not the game would require PlayStation Plus for people who simply wanted a solo experience. As it turns out, the official answer is that Godfall can be played solo without needing a PlayStation Plus subscription first.
While that news may make some fans who intend to play through the game solo happy, that doesn’t mean this is an offline experience. Many comments following the reply attempted to direct the conversation back to the elephant in the room. Even without a PlayStation Plus requirement, Godfall does require a persistent internet connection in order to play. While most games these days require internet to play and receive updates like Destiny 2 for example, not being able to play a single player experience offline remains a dividing issue in the video game community.
Some attempted to justify the internet requirement, assuming that Godfall will have rotating content on a daily and weekly basis. This is a popular feature that many loot-focused games adhere to such as the aforementioned Destiny 2, The Division 2, and Marvel’s Avengers to name a few. Rotating content such as loot, quests, and activities are one of the ways developers can entice players to continue logging into the game and with Godfall looking to compete in this genre, many are expecting some sort of rotating content to keep the game fresh after launch as well.
It’s been an odd journey for Godfall since it was announced at The Game Awards last year. The debut trailer introduced players to this fantasy world occupied by these knight looking characters with large weapons. Since that impressive CG trailer, the marketing has seemingly had a difficult time explaining the core concepts, mechanics and showing off actual gameplay. There’s still a bit of mystery surrounding the title, which now has about a month to try and sway undecided consumers to take the plunge when the game launches in November.
Godfall will be available on PC and PlayStation 5 on November 12.
