Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Uses Breath of the Wild Hyrule Map

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity moves further away from its predecessor in terms of similarity and is becoming a true Breath of the Wild prequel game. Footage from today’s Nintendo Treehouse Live event shows the same map from Breath of the Wild, and some other familiar features as well.

Nintendo took quite a few risks with Breath of the Wild, changing up a tried-and-true formula found in Legend of Zelda games for decades. Fortunately, it turned out to be a massive success and many gamers even call it their favorite game or the best that they’ve ever played. Likewise, many have been looking forward to more content in this era of Hyrule and Nintendo obliged.

Instead of making a simple DLC pack for BotW, a sequel is well on its way. Only a short while ago, the internet was looking forward to news and updates in Nintendo Direct live streams, but instead, they were surprised with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

But Age of Calamity won’t be similar to the original Hyrule Warriors. Though Nintendo is keeping with the hack-and-slash mechanics and multiple playable characters, it will be Breath of the Wild prequel, with art styles and mechanics to match. Fans got a closer look at the recently-announced Legend of Zelda installment today at the Treehouse livestream event, where it was shown that Age of Calamity will feature familiar elements to Breath of the Wild and will leave behind the vision of the original Hyrule Warriors in more ways than one.

First, the map will be the same as that in Breath of the Wild. Players will select a stage from a map that looks nearly identical, and though it may come with some updated graphics and animations, it features the same locations and expands over the same areas. Additionally, players can navigate to a blacksmith to upgrade weapons because, this time around, Link’s weapons won’t break, as well as other Champions’.

Cooking and resources will also remain a huge aspect in the prequel title. Resources will be used when improving weapons as well as accessing new areas. Age of Calamity will also feature new recipes for Link and his friends to learn. As far as cooking goes, the hosts of the Treehouse livestream note that characters will have favorite dishes in the upcoming prequel, so it should be fun for players to collect each recipe.

Also directly pulled from Breath of the Wild will be the rune system, such as Stasis and Magnesis. And it looks like each playable character, such as the newly introduced Urbosa, will be able to utilize these runes in combat.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will release for Nintendo Switch on November 20th.
