What to Play Before Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart Releases

Several months ago, Insomniac Games revealed Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, which is the upcoming new entry to the classic platformer game that has been on hiatus since 2016. Of course, veteran players would know that the Ratchet and Clank franchise is one of the PlayStation’s longest-running series out there, but it has been quiet over the last few years apart from the remake of the first game that was released several years ago.

Now, during Insomniac’s official reveal of the game, it appears that Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is shaping to be one of the most impressive games on the PS5, which will definitely excite longtime fans of the franchise. However, with 15 games under its arsenal, newcomers to the franchise might have a hard time knowing where to start. Now, here are the games that newbies should play first before delving deep into Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart once it releases to the PS5.

The 2016 remake of the first Ratchet and Clank game is the best way for new players to get acquainted with the series. Not only does the remake allow players to experience the story of the original, but it is also the most visually appealing game in the franchise, especially since the older games haven’t aged all that well. However, players should also know that the 2016 remake of Ratchet and Clank deviated a bit from the story of the original title, introducing some locations and characters sooner. Moreover, Dr. Nefarious from the third Ratchet and Clank game was already included in the remake, which is important given his involvement in Rift Apart.

Of course, players who really want to dive deeper into the lore of Ratchet and Clank should at least play the first three games in the series. As previously mentioned, the graphics and controls of these old games may not be up to today’s standard. However, those who can get past that should know that the original trilogy provides a necessary overview of the Ratchet and Clank universe. Additionally, it is worth noting that the Ratchet and clank trilogy propelled the entire franchise to what it is today, which is why it is important for new players to experience what these games have to offer before going into Rift Apart.

Although Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart’s release date is still unknown, fans are eagerly anticipating its release, especially after all the new features that Insomniac has worked into the upcoming game. During a gameplay showcase at Gamescom a few months ago, it has been revealed that the PS5’s SSD will be fully utilized in Rift Apart with the introduction of the dimensional shifting mechanic. Essentially, this means that the beefier internals of the PS5 will allow the game to load textures at lightning speeds. In the gameplay footage, the PS5 was able to transition between worlds in as little as two to three seconds.

Moreover, Ratchet will be getting plenty of new equipment and abilities in Rift Apart. Thanks to Ratchet’s connection with Dr. Nefarious’ dimensional rift gun, he can now teleport through rifts. Additionally, Ratchet also has a revamped arsenal in the upcoming game, and it has been confirmed that each of his new weapons will have their own unique characteristics, giving players a wide variety of options as they traverse through worlds. Although Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart still has no specific release date, Insomniac revealed that the game will be launched shortly after the release of the PS5, which means that at the very least, the game will be available to Sony’s next-gen console sometime this year.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is planned to release shortly after the PS5’s launch.
