Among Us: 5 Quality of Life Improvements The Game Needs

Among Us was on the market for two years before it blew up, previously having an abysmal concurrent player count, yet hitting 3 million Among Us players by the end of September. With such a sudden surge in popularity, it’s not a surprise that the game has a few areas in need of improvement.

It’s sudden popularity resulted in developer Innersloth canceling Among Us 2 in order to focus on the original game. Server issues and other growing pains are likely up there with general improvements to the game, and while bug fixes, better servers, and other technical issues are a given, there’s more that can be done to ensure Among Us goes into 2021 strong. As such, there’s a few quality of life improvements that should be prioritized.

Perhaps one of the most requested improvements is for the Among Us Impostors to be able to see the ghosts of players who have been voted out or killed. It’s a small thing, but as a ghost, players can quickly finish their tasks. The rest of the game, if the game is going well, is spent floating around, chatting with others who are ghosts, or watching players who are alive. However, as a ghost, Impostors can still aid their ally by sabotaging. Ghosts, on the other hand, only have tasks.

It would be interesting if Ghosts could not only be seen by impostors, but still actively take part in the game. Perhaps, just once, a ghost can somehow warn those who are still alive that they are in danger. Perhaps ghosts could simple interfere with an impostor. Whatever it is, having more to do as a ghost than completing tasks and killing time would be a big QOL improvement for Among Us.

Among Us actually led to an up rise in Discord downloads because every player wants a good lobby they enjoy to play with. Constantly looking for a new lobby can be a pain, especially when the lobby itself is full of less-than-ideal or obscene players. Having a way to add friends on Among Us would mean that players could sync up with those they enjoying playing with, instead of hoping to come across a good lobby of people who are fun to play with.

One of the biggest changes Among Us could use is a penalty for quitters. In Apex Legends and other ranked multiplayer games, for example, quitting early results in a penalty because it ruins the experience for other players. While there’s not a “ranked” mode in Among Us, it is a common sight to see a many players quit at the beginning of the game for one specific reason: they’re not the impostor.

Playing Impostor in Among Us is probably the most popular role, but having 3-4 players quit because they are not the impostor typically ends the game early, cheapening the experience. Players who frequently quit, especially at the beginning of a match and unless it is due to server errors, should be faced with a semi-serious time penalty before joining or hosting another game. These players typically ruin the experience for everyone else, and as the game gets more and more popular, it could become a more serious problem if not dealt with.

Among Us has a cheating and hacking problem. The former is a more difficult situation, as nothing really stops players from sharing information outside the game that results in an Impostor being discovered, but hacking in Among Us can be handled with better anti-cheat software. Cheating in Among Us by fans discussing the game through other avenues, such as Facebook messenger or Discord, is a harder issue to deal with, but Innersloth is likely investigating this.

Right now, there are only three maps in Among Us: The Skeld, Mira HQ, and Polus. The latter is arguably the least popular, with most lobbies primarily playing on the Skeld. Including more maps means more diverse gameplay, which can go further in continuing the game’s popularity. A custom map maker for Among Us has even been discussed by the developer, and while something that extensive is likely far down the line, including new maps is something that should happen sooner rather than later.

Among Us is available now on PC and Mobile.
