A possible leak from an industry insider suggests that Marvel’s often delayed Black Widow will feature a character many fans were hoping to see again. In a tweet from graphic designer and VFX artist Amit Chaudhari, he claims an inside source has confirmed the character’s return. Even though it’s currently only a rumor, there are potential spoilers ahead, both for Black Widow and other recent Marvel films.
The rumor says that Clint Barton, the crack shot archer Hawkeye himself, will join Scarlett Johansson in Black Widow. Played once again by Jeremy Renner if it’s true, the potential leak doesn’t specify if the character will feature as a critical part of the film or simply a cameo. Once again, the rumor is unverified at the moment, but it wouldn’t be terribly surprising given the history between Hawkeye and Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff.
The prequel, now set to premiere in May of 2021, will dive into the much teased backstory of Romanoff. Throughout each of her appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she would often tease audiences with quips and banter about old missions and how she became the ruthlessly efficient fighter fans know and love. From “I got red in my ledger” to mentions of Budapest, there are plenty of areas this film could cover, and the possible inclusion of Hawkeye only excites the mind more. The two friends clearly have a history, and the banter shared between them in previous films displays a chemistry that would be wonderful to see again.
Other rumors over the past year (that may or may not be based on actual leaks) have brought up the possibility that Hawkeye will show up in a post-credits scene depicting him and his family solemnly paying tribute to Natasha at her grave. Given how fans felt a bit put off when Black Widow didn’t get a proper sendoff after her heroic sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame while Tony Stark warranted an entire funeral scene, this could perhaps be the studio’s way of making amends in a way. Of course, that assumes the leak is true.
However, the timing of this new rumor about Hawkeye could lend credence to the aforementioned speculation. After all, there wouldn’t be much point to leaking info like this if it wasn’t true, since it’s basically just more of the same rumors from before. Regardless of the odds being in its favor, though, everything here should be taken with a grain of salt and seen as no more than speculation until confirmed.
Whether or not the leak proves to be true, it’s still the end of an era. Black Widow has been one of the most anticipated upcoming films since long before it was even confirmed, so not only will it serve as a sort of add-on to the end of Marvel’s current phase, but the fans who clamored for it for years will finally get some closure on that front as well. Here’s hoping it’s as good as the rumors make it sound.
