Skyrim: 10 Hidden Locations In Whiterun You Never Knew About

Skyrim’s world is home to nine different Holds, with each Hold having unique unmarked locations inside them. In the Whiterun Hold, exploring outside of the city will allow players to discover some interesting locations — often telling a story. These stories can range from a dead body to a puzzle that needs to be solved for a reward.

Some of these unmarked locations can only be found after completing certain quests, while others can be found as soon as the player starts the game. As if the world of Skyrim was not big enough, players now have more reason to go out and explore.

10 Swallowed Skeleton

Players exploring to the east of Whiterun might run across an interesting sight. North of the Sleeping Tree Camp is a mammoth skeleton. The only thing is, there is a human skeleton inside of the mammoth. It would seem the human was unlucky and became a meal for the mammoth.

The mammoth skeleton could have also been used as a makeshift prison. There are no treasures or items to be picked up, only providing a confusing sight for adventurers.

9 Puzzling Pillar Ruins

Players who enjoy the puzzles of Skyrim will enjoy stumbling across this location. There will be three puzzle pillars in a clearing with a grate that needs to be opened. This location is southeast of the Sleeping Tree Camp.

The solutions to the puzzles can be found on the back of the stones the puzzle pillars are next to. When the player gets the solution, they can pull a lever and open the grate. Going down will reveal a skeleton and a chest, along with a Destruction skill book.

8 Ruined Toll And Wispmother’s Well

The toll and well can be found north of Ivarstead. Walking the road north will lead players to a ruined Imperial toll, with the gate and guardhouse being destroyed. Inside the tollbooth will be a lockbox located underneath a basket and a Conjuration skill book.

There will also be a well, with three wisps circling around the player. As the player gets closer to the well, they will discover a Wispmother. By killing the Wispmother, the Dragonborn might have just given citizens of Ivarstead their well back.

7 The Expired Alchemist

East of the Talking Stone Camp, players can find a pond with rocks in the center of it. On these rocks will be a dead alchemist with nirnroot and a leveled dagger. By following the river from the camp, players can easily find this location.

While it is unclear how the alchemist died, a few theories can come to mind. Perhaps the alchemist was trying to escape the Giants and got trapped in the river, falling down the waterfall. They could have climbed up on the rocks, where they ended up dying from their wounds.

6 Rorikstead Resurrection

This is a Dragon Mound that is located west of Rorikstead. During the quest Alduin’s Wall, a dragon named Nahagliiv will be resurrected from here. Playing a role in the main questline means players will be more likely to stumble across this location. Fighting a dragon and obtaining the dragon soul makes this location a pretty decent one for loot.

5 Whiterun Military Camp

This location will show up while players are taking part in the Skyrim Civil War on the side of the Stormcloaks. It will still be there if the player sides with the Imperials, it’ll just be less likely the player will venture to it.

Players will be able to see the catapults that are attacking the city, even being able to send the projectiles themselves by interacting with the catapult.

4 Smuggler’s Den

The smuggler’s den is located northwest of Dragonsreach, located outside the city walls in a small cliff. It is home to bandits who will attack the player on sight. After clearing out the bandits, the player can take the horse and use it as their own.

There is a locked chest, which will spawn three more bandits when opened. Also inside of the den is four things of Skooma, a pickpocket skill book, and a leveled weapon. Killing the bandits in this area probably helped Whiterun citizen, with the bandits no longer having a base near the city.

3 Fetid Pond

Fetid Pond is located southwest of Swindler’s Den. Inside of the pond is a mammoth skeleton and a bandit body, containing a little bit of loot. There is also a sabre cat nearby, which will attack the player if they get too close.

Players can also find a pickpocket skill book at the location, giving them a boost with the skill. There is not too much to loot from this location, instead giving players a little area to explore before they continue on their way.

2 Whiterun Dead Guard

Players exploring outside of the walls of Whiterun might run across a dead guard covered in blood. This guard will only appear after the quest The Fallen, Odahviing will pick up a city guard and drop them while attacking Dragonsreach. It is a nice addition to see the guard from the quest will stay there after being dropped.

Nearby the body will be a chest with leveled loot and ore veins to mine. Venturing to this location before completing The Fallen will reveal no guard body or no blood on the rocks.

1 Bloodied Box

While venturing through the Whiterun Hold, players might run across a bloodied strongbox. It is located southeast of the Sleeping Tree Camp. The strongbox is hidden in the grass, only being an apprentice-leveled lock.

Players who come to the location will notice a bloodied skeleton arm, most likely the last owner of the box. Unlocking and looting the box will cause wolves to attack the player. They should be easy to defeat while also explaining where all of the blood came from.
