The launch of the PS5 is a little over one month away, and members of the gaming community from around the world are eagerly awaiting the release of the next-gen system. The console itself has been teased for several years now, and with the release date of the PS5 rapidly approaching, the console has been pre-ordered by many people worldwide. Although, for one country, in particular, the PS5 may be arriving later than expected.
The launch of the next generation of consoles has become a big event. The upcoming release of both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X has left quite an impact in terms of retail outlets and even entire countries, so much so that Walmart had to actively change its PS5 pre-order plan. However, a problem has arisen in India that could potentially have Indian gaming enthusiasts waiting an indefinite period of time before the console’s release.
A Delhi citizen by the name of Hitesh Aswani filed a trademark for the name PS5 back in October of last year, nearly five months before Sony filed for the intellectual property claim. As of right now, both Sony and Aswani’s claim to use the title of PS5 have been opposed by the Indian government, which likely means the government is attempting to straighten things out.
However, given how close the console’s release date is, it seems quite unlikely that Indian citizens will be able to purchase the console on the same day as the rest of the world. Not until Sony attains the right to use the name PS5 in a commercial sales sense. Not to mention that apparently, Indian citizens are unable to even pre-order the PS5.
With any luck, the potential delay won’t be that long. Though, it definitely seems like this dispute will take some time to resolve itself. This is not the first time that a major problem regarding the commercial accessibility of next-gen systems has impacted certain countries. In Turkey, the cost of the Xbox Series X is ridiculously expensive, as a result of various tax policies the country has implemented.
It is rather unfortunate that problems like this have begun to surface just one month before the release of the PS5. However, it’s not as though the console itself won’t be available in India altogether. The console will eventually release, just not in tandem with the rest of the world. Hopefully, the dispute in India is resolved quickly and Indian members of the gaming community will be able to experience Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls soon enough.
The PS5 is set to launch on November 12th, 2020.
