Hades has released to popular acclaim. Over the course of its early access, the game sold around 700,000 copies, but now thanks to the 1.0 version, it’s crossed over a million very quickly! And, who can blame such success? The game is incredible, and people have always loved interesting mythologies, especially those from Greek and Norse Cultures.
And yes, Hades has all the horrible yet divine Olympus Gods we’ve come to know and love/hate. It’s part of the reason the game is so amazing, but to be fair, there are tons of other reasons as well. We’re ranking worst to best on a combination of their design in-game, the usefulness of their Boons, and the mythos behind the God themselves.
12 Aphrodite: Goddess Of Love

Aphrodite’s design feels like a swing and a miss, likely the only one in the game. Look at how unique Ares looks and then look at the simplicity of Aphrodite’s design. Plus, her Boons are arguably the worst in the game, focusing on a status effect called “Weak” that simply causes Zag to take less damage from enemies inflicted with it. This isn’t bad per se, but it really only helps those who just started the game, or those who have the Pact of Punishment turned up way too high.
11 Hades: God Of The Underworld

Now we’re at the primary “antagonist” of this game, God of the Underworld and angry father himself, Hades. Hades is a fantastic design, a complex character, and is also incredibly imposing. In the context of this specific game, Hades is just a bad dad. Now, as the narrative goes on, we get to see why, but that still doesn’t excuse it. And, he offers no Boons in comparison to almost every single other character on this list. Plus, the guy has a giant pupper sitting next to him for all time, and he rarely ever pets him!
10 Persephone: Goddess Of The Seasons

Slight spoiler here, but yes, Persephone does show up in the game. Obviously, she has some connections to the narrative of Hades, considering anyone who knows Greek mythology knows how her story goes. But, her depiction in Hades is really inventive, it’s not how we expected her to look or act. She’s a very practical character.
Frankly, she should be higher, but she doesn’t offer any Boons so that’s sort of a big mark against her. That said, she does offer something amazing to Zagreus past a certain point.
9 Dionysus: God Of Wine

Next up is Dionysus, God of Wine, and Madness. Now, design-wise Dionysus looks amazing. He really fits the super chill frat-boy vibe that being a God of Wine brings to mind. He’s the very definition of down-to-earth, and he’s always ready to party. But as far as his personality goes, that’s about it, he’s pretty one dimensional. Plus, outside of his Hangover status being pretty useful, his Boons aren’t the greatest. Some people swear by them, but we always found better options.
8 Poseidon: God Of The Sea

Poseidon is high up here for plenty of reasons, but the least of which is his Boons. The God of the Sea might be mighty, but his Boons are only good on specific builds/aspects. Don’t get us wrong, his version of the Stygian Blade is likely the best, and is amazing for speedruns, but otherwise, his knockback Boons are more annoying than helpful. That said, this is one of the most unique designs we’ve seen for the Ocean King and we love it. The long, flowing hair that looks like water along with his beard, the sash, the crown, it all just works. And his personality in-game is very similar to the more jolly renditions of Aqua-Man mixed with that lame-joke spouting uncle everyone seems to have.
7 Artemis: Goddess Of The Hunt

Now we move onto Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt and Wildnerness. Her Boons are quite mediocre. Critical damage is crazy in Hades and has tons of potential, but flat, reliable damage is more dependable. So, if she’s your favorite, sorry about the low placement, we still adore her overall. And her design is really where Artemis stands out. She was one of the last Gods to receive an official design in the Early Access, and we can safely say the final product was worth the wait.
6 Demeter: Goddess Of Nature’s Cycle

Demeter has an alright design, but her Boons and backstory are top-notch. Demeter is the Goddess of the Seasons and has tons of control over life and death. She’s honestly one of the most powerful on Olympus in mythology, oh, and she’s the mother of Persephone as well. Demeter’s design really gives off this professional and cold look that contrasts Zeus’s deceptively warm yet imposing one.
5 Zeus: God Of Thunder

Finally, we’ve arrived at the youngest of the three brothers, and also likely the most powerful, Zeus. Media and games tend to portray him on both sides of the moral spectrum, as like the jolly dad with a bit of an angry side or a sociopathic murderer.
Hades portrays him a tad nicer than say, God of War, but he’s still absolutely painted as a warmonger and all-around mean guy. Frankly, he’s only this high on this list because his Boons might be the all-around strongest in the game. Seriously, every single Zeus Boon is almost universally useful. And, while the art style of Hades is incredible, the design for Zeus in it is about as stereotypical as Supergiant can get considering their usual uniqueness.
4 Ares: God Of War

Now, in comparison to Zeus’ stereotypical look, Ares is way more uniquely represented in Hades. The God of War is usually depicted as someone covered in blood and full of fury barely holding themselves together, a real maniac. Just look at Ares and Kratos in the God of War series. But, Ares in Supergiant’s world is just so refined, so kept together. But, once he starts talking about war and blood, you can hear his passion for war in voice actors’ delivery, and it all starts to make sense. Plus, Ares has some insanely useful Boons and his Doom status effect is great for stacking damage on bosses.
3 Hermes: God Of Travel

Hermes is pretty high up here on the list and that likely isn’t what people were expecting, but let us explain why. It comes down to three things, utility, dependability, and creativity. Hermes Boons tend to focus on speeding up Zagreus, and there’s rarely a situation where that isn’t useful, hence, utility. Then there’s his Keepsake which can “dependably” give Zagreus a ton more speed and dodge chance if the player focuses on clearing rooms quickly. And finally, the fact that he talks so much and offers a keepsake that doesn’t just make his Boons pop up more often means that Hermes feels like a more unique and “creative” NPC than the rest of the gods and one of the earliest characters people should give Nectar to.
2 Athena: Goddess Of Wisdom

Athena’s design in Hades is superb. It’s nothing we could have ever imagined, yet it’s such a perfect representation for the Goddess of Wisdom and Strategy. The armor, the professionally-tied ponytail, the owl on her finger, her power stance, the strong features, they all add up to an amazing design that immediately screams “Athena.” Plus, her Boons are incredible. Most of them give the player some way to deflect enemy attacks/projectiles and she’s the only Goddess that offers Boons to replenish charges of Death Defiance.
1 Zagreus: God Of…Escaping?

Zagreus is a God too, of what, even he’s not sure yet, but he absolutely counts as one. Mythos tells us that Zag is the God of Rebirth and Blood, and that makes sense considering how many times he’s come out of the River Styx and respawned. He is an incredibly interesting character that we literally get to see the progression of and play as. Plus, his accent, line delivery, and absurd amount of reactions to every situation make him so innately charming!
