There’s only a little over a month left to go before Destiny 2 receives its next major round of content with the launch of the Beyond Light expansion. Anticipation is high for how the DLC’s new content will shake up the game for longtime players, but for those who will just be starting out on November 10, Bungie will have plenty of fresh content tailored for them.
On paper, last year’s free-to-play relaunch of the game, Destiny 2: New Light, should have been a perfect entry point for new players to jump into the franchise, but its execution has left much to be desired. During its latest weekly blog, Bungie acknowledged that the current new player experience, which lets players loose in the Tower after just a single mission, hasn’t done the best job of getting newcomers up to speed on the nuances of Destiny 2’s gameplay, cast, and narrative.
This, Bungie said, will change next month. The developer has teased its plans for changing up the new player experience with Beyond Light, and today it finally went into detail. While the game will still begin with players being resurrected by their Ghost, the key difference is that they won’t immediately find a ship out of the Cosmodrome. Instead, they’ll cross paths with another Guardian named Shaw Han, who’s on a mission with his fireteam to find out what the Hive are up to in the area.
With his help, players will spend multiple missions getting acquainted with the game’s world and systems. Bungie said they’ll have the opportunity to try out a few of the game’s weapons, find engrams to try out different pieces of armor, and learn to navigate the user interface. This should result in them having a solid understanding of how Destiny 2‘s quests, bounties, and more work by the time they finally reach the Tower.
Although the revamped New Light quest is being designed with newcomers in mind, Bungie added that it will also be available to longtime players as well. With the Cosmodrome leaving the Destiny Content Vault next month, players will be free to walk down memory lane and explore where their Destiny journey began. That said, Bungie teased that there will also be “occasional moments of discovery” like a Lost Sector that wasn’t there the first time around.
So while new players won’t be able to dive into Beyond Light’s new Europa location, Stasis powers, and other changes right away, they won’t be left out when the expansion drops. “We’re excited to see how new players react to our revamped New Light experience,” Bungie said, “and for many of you to get your boots back on the ground in the Cosmodrome.”
Destiny 2: Beyond Light will launch on November 10 for PC, PS4, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. The PS5 version should be available November 12.
