Invincible Trailer Features an All-Star Cast and a Bit of Violence

Superhero stories continue to be the order of the decade, in so many variations it’s hard to keep it all straight. Now that audiences have had a good long while with unironic classic heroes, however, shows have begun to drift into darker territory. While The Boys has easily claimed the spot of being the definitive dark and edgy live action hero show, Amazon seems to be tapping into that market again with animated show Invincible, which just released an early teaser trailer.

The first season of Invincible is set to take place over eight, hour-long episodes and is written by Robert Kirkman of The Walking Dead. Kirkman is adapting his own original comic for the show, which features Mark Grayson as the 17 year old son of Earth’s most powerful superhero. Overall the show will be about Grayson balancing both the pressures of normal teenage life with finding his purpose and identity as a superpowered being, but will also be more violent than your typical coming of age story.

Invincible also has an impressive voice cast under its belt, starring everyone from J.K. Simmons as Mark’s father, to appearances by Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, and even Mark Hamill. The show had a panel at this year’s New York Comic Con where the trailer was revealed, but the release date is still a vague 2021 for the time being.

A synopsis has also been released for a little more detail, which goes as follows: “Invincible is an adult animated superhero show that revolves around seventeen-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who’s just like every other guy his age — except that his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). But as Mark develops powers of his own, he discovers that his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.” So there’s definitely more going on under the surface than a straightforward teen angst drama, which fans of the original comic are likely already aware of. Whether the show will stick closely to the original, or take some new creative liberties remains to be seen when the show finally hits streaming.

Invincible hits Amazon Prime sometime in 2021.
