Marvel’s MODOK Is Having a Mid-Life Crisis: First Pics

Even high-powered super villains have day-to-day problems. Hulu has released the first images for Marvel’s MODOK, a new stop-motion animated about the infamous Marvel supervillain. Announced during virtual New York Comic Con, Marvel’s MODOK stars Patton Oswalt as the titular bad guy having a series of bad days.

The news comes from Entertainment Weekly, which received a first-hand look at the new show. The images give an idea of the life of MODOK and the world he inhabits.  Having been ousted from the fictional criminal organization AIM, MODOK finds himself having a midlife crisis. As he tries to recuperate and regain his edge, he faces the challenges of everyday life, from handling his marriage to fighting large corporations impeding his business as a supervillain.

Marvel’s MODOK is a collaboration from  Marvel Animation, in collaboration with Stoopid Buddy Studios the same house that helped build Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken and Hulu’s Crossing Swords.  Marvel’s MODOK is a collaboration between writer Jordan Blum (American Dad) and Patton Oswalt (Mapleworth Murders)

The show also features the talents of Aimee Garcia (Lucifer) Ben Schwartz (Sonic The Hedgehog) and Melissa Fumero (Big City Greens). Beck Bennet (SNL) plays as Austin Van Der Sleet, MODOK’s arch-nemesis, and the man who acquires AIM with his company, GRUMBL. Blum describes Marvel’s MODOK as a show that combines the high-stakes action of Marvel with water-cooler moments, inspired by shows such as The Office and Modern Family. It’s half Marvel, half mundane.

After over a decade of Marvel’s films and high-stakes action, its refreshing to see a different twist on one of the comic’s most infamous supervillains.  With Marvel movies being delayed and conventions put on indefinite hold, it’ll be interesting to see where and how Marvel adapts its properties further for online streaming services. It’s clear that Disney and Marvel are further leaning into Disney+, with the announcement of a Nick Fury series starring Samuel L Jackson

Marvel’s MODOK is set to air exclusively on Hulu in early 2021.
