Skyrim: 10 Things You Never Knew About Clavicus Vile | Game Rant

The world of Skyrim is one of the most extensive and in-depth game worlds ever created. Because of it’s sheer scope, just like in the real world, it can be all too easy for gamers to miss some pertinent and interesting information.

One of the most deeply expounded aspects of the Elder Scrolls universe are the Daedric Princes. Considering how easy some of the lore is to miss, many players lack a full knowledge of these demonic entities. Clavicus Vile is one of the most treacherous and compelling of these princes, here are 10 facts players may have missed about the Daedric Prince of Trickery.

10 Other Names

As with most Daedric Princes, Clavicus Vile is known by many names. The two most prevalent besides his actual one are the Child-God of The Morningstar, and the Prince of Bargains. The former comes from the fact that Clavicus Vile has a special connection to the Elder Scrolls month of Morning Star as this is time time in which his followers may summon him. The latter comes from the fact that Clavicus Vile is the Daedric Prince of power, wishes, deals, serenity, and most importantly, trickery.

9 The Fields Of Regret

Like every other Daedric Prince, Clavicus Vile has his own realm of Oblivion. His realm is known as the Field of Regret.

It is notable for it’s initially pleasant and bountiful appearance, though at a closer look, all that can be found within this realm is pain, anguish, and suffering. True to form for a Prince notorious for his deceit.

8 Appearance

While his statue may be large and imposing. Vile usually appears as a miniscule, imp-like, horned man. When refusing to show his appearance he will either speak through his statue, or as a voice from the void echoing from a red mist.

7 Dealings With Humans

Unlike many other Daedra. Clavicus Vile does not seek out or instigate interactions with mortals. These interactions are actually started by mortals seeking to have their wishes granted by summoning the Prince. Clavicus will, in most cases, grant these wishes or desires, however there will usually be a very serious catch that puts the summoner in a compromising position. His motivations for doing this seem to be just for pure sadistic enjoyment, and a pursuit of mortal souls.

6 Barbas

Clavicus Vile can create other living aspects of himself, this is nothing special for a Daedric Prince, though Vile seems to give these other portions of himself much more autonomy. These aspects can operate completely independent of the Daedric Prince. A fan favorite has been the loveable dog Barbas, who has frequently acted as a voice of reason against Vile.

5 Umbra

Skyrim has many powerful and unique swords that the Dragonborn can wield. One of the swords that did not make it into the base game however was Umbra. Umbra is another sentient aspect of Clavicus Vile’s. This one however has been much more sinister and problematic than Barbas. Once in the 4th era, shortly after the Oblivion Crisis, Umbra managed to siphon power from Clavicus Vile, create a giant floating Daedric city, known as Umbriel, and with it, almost take over all of Tamriel. Luckily the Daedric entity did not succeed in this endeavor.

4 Daedric Artifacts

When compared to other Daedric Princes, Clavicus Vile has an unusually high number of artifacts. This can be attribute to his tendency to gift humans with material items that can fulfill their desires.

His artifacts range from a cup that can increase the drinkers highest attributes, a quill that can improve one’s writing skills, and a mask that can make the wearer more persuasive, to only name a few.

3 Connection To Vampirism

When compared to other fantasy worlds, the vampires of Skyrim seem to have maintained a good portion of their humanity, with some managing to seamlessly blend into everyday mortal life. This was not always the case, vampires were not able to walk in the daylight, and were stuck in their final, monstrous form. Clavicus Vile was the one that granted the ability to maintain a mortal appearance, and walk in the daylight, with the caveat that they regularly feasted on human blood.

2 Generally Tolerated

Clavicus Vile is uniquely tolerated and worshiped for a Daedric Prince. Despite his occasional trickery, giving vampires the ability to day-walk, and his creation Umbra almost destroying Tamriel, Clavicus Vile seems to pass by with an almost positive reputation. Having many worshipers across the land, and general intrigue from most mortals.

1 Not Always Deceitful

Clavicus Vile, is in the vast majority of situations where he grants mortals their wishes, looking to take advantage of them, and in many cases even steal their souls. However this does not mean that he has not had his shining moments. There have been instances where Clavicus has been helpful, and even thankful to those that assist him. A good example is the Dragonborn being rewarded with either the Rueful Axe or Masque for returning Barbas to the Daedric Prince.
