Xbox Series X Exclusive The Medium Releases in December

With the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles approaching their launch on November 10th, many have been frustrated by the fact that Microsoft is launching the systems without any major exclusives. This is mostly due to the unfortunate delay of Halo Infinite to 2021 following its underwhelming gameplay reveal this past July. Despite this, Microsoft does have one substantial exclusive title coming very soon after the launch of the systems in the form of Bloober Team’s The Medium.

The Medium was first reveal at Microsoft’s Inside Xbox event this past May where Observer and Blair Witch developer Bloober Team revealed that it was teaming up with Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka to deliver the studio’s most ambitious horror game to date. The game follows Marianne, a medium who can travel between the real world and a spiritual underworld simultaneously. The game renders both world using the Xbox Series X’s SSD and the game require players to use information gathered from both worlds to solve puzzles.

In a new atmospheric trailer, Bloober Team has not only revealed the game’s haunting environments, contrasting the real world and spirit world while playing composer Arkadiusz Reikowski’s track “Marianne’s Theme.” The trailer also reveals that The Medium will launch on Xbox Series X/S and PC on December 10th. The game’s soundtracks are being composed in collaboration between Reikowski and Yamaoka, with Reikowski composing the real world tracks and Yamaoka covering the spiritual world’s score. Akira Yamaoka will also be collaborating with Silent Hill soundtrack vocalist Mary Elizabeth McGlynn.

Bloober Team recently collaborated with Microsoft in 2019 to launch Blair Witch as a timed Xbox One console exclusive through Xbox Game Pass. The Medium will also launch onto Xbox Game Pass on both Xbox Series X/S and PC, however the game will also retail for $49.99 on both platforms. The PC version will also be available through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Players choosing to pre-order will receive a digital copy of the game’s soundtrack and a digital art book.

While fans may be disappointed that The Medium will be missing from the Xbox Series X/S lineup at launch, releasing the game in December could prove as a successful strategic move from Microsoft to keep Xbox Game Pass subscribers after the console’s launch in November. A healthy stream of Xbox Game Pass titles following the console’s launch will keep players from unplugging their console until the next major title launches in 2021. While it remains to be seen what Microsoft has to offer going into early 2021, the Xbox Series X’s backwards compatibility means that even introducing games from the Xbox One and Xbox 360 library could keep the Series X alive and healthy heading into the new year.

The Medium will launch for PC and Xbox Series X/S on December 10th 2020.
