The shadow of a kaiju looms large over 2021 with a new Godzilla series stomping its way onto Netflix next spring. The streaming giant announced that the Godzilla Singular Point anime series will hit globally in April.
There are scant details about the plot of Godzilla Singular Point, only a list of notable names attached and that it will be a mix of both hand drawn and CG animation styles. The ones responsible for the visual stylings of this series will be character designers Kazue Katō and Eiji Yamamori. Yamamori is well known for her work on several Studio Ghibili films (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and The Wind Rises) and will be designing the Kaiju. Katō is known for the supernatural ghost hunting anime Blue Exorcist and will be handing all other character designs.
Netflix appears to have a thing for Godzilla because this is the second series featuring the iconic kaiju to appear on its streaming service. A trio of Godzilla anime feature films appeared on the network in 2017 and 2018. Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle, and Godzilla: The Planet Eater were all successful enough to compel Netflix into greenlight Godzilla Singular Point.
While there are few hints about what Godzilla Singular Point will be about the involvement of director Atsushi Takahashi and a collaboration between two popular anime studios at least point to a quality production. Takahashi is a veteran anime director with Doraemon The Movie 2017: Great Adventure in the Antarctic Kachi Kochi as his last notable movie. Directing an anime about a time-traveling robot cat isn’t that far of a leap from a movie about giant monsters.
A collaboration between anime studios Bones and Orange may be the thing that sets this particular Godzilla series apart from its predecessor. Orange is responsible for the current Beastars anime currently appearing on Netflix while Bones has My Hero Academia, Mob Psycho 100 and another Netflix anime Carole and Tuesday to its credit.
Godzilla Singular Point will release on Netflix in April 2021
