A Japanese dollhouse maker and Red Dwarf fan has crafted an incredibly detailed diorama of Lister and Rimmer’s sleeping quarters from the early series of the long-running sci-fi sitcom.
Daiki Endo, who won the 2019 season of TV Tokyo’s Dollhouse King Finals, tweeted out several pics of his creation to approval of Red Dwarf fans and Danny John Jules, who plays the Cat in the show, who replied to Daiki saying “I love it man!”
Originally broadcast in 1988 on the U.K.’s BBC 2, Red Dwarf was loosely based on a recurring sketch, Dave Hollins: Space Cadet, from radio series Son of Cliché by creators Rob Grant and Doug Naylor. The show is set on Red Dwarf, a mining ship approx. 3 million years away from Earth with its crew of Dave Lister – the last human survivor, Arnold Rimmer – a hologram of Lister’s immediate superior, the Cat – a vain humanoid lifeform evolved from Lister’s cat and Kryten, a service mechanoid who joined the crew from season 3.
Endo’s diorama perfectly recreates the grey sleeping quarters seen in Red Dwarf‘s first two seasons and is filled with small details from the show such as the bazookoid guns, a lone Skutter robot helper and Lister’s guitar, no doubt still out of tune. Endo even managed to sneak in a couple of references to fan favorite episodes, such as the Talkie Toaster from ‘Future Echos’ and the Holly Hop Drive from ‘Parallel Universe’.
Daiki Endo has been crafting exquisitely detailed dollhouses and automata since 2009, since then he’s had his work exhibited many times, featured on TV and made the cover of several magazines. According to his website he’s also open to commissions. Maybe he can do Starbug next.
Red Dwarf is available to stream now on Britbox.
