Animal Crossing: New Horizons Player Builds Their Own Little Silent Hill

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is no stranger to horror. While the game itself is wholesome and cute, with the tools available to players, they can change nearly every aspect of their personal island. It’s possible to turn one’s town into anything but charming, and plenty of fans have given their islands spooky, horrifying makeovers since the game’s release.

One player, perhaps feeling inspired by it currently being October, decided to reinvent a little piece of Silent Hill in their own town. They pulled it off through a combination of in-game assets as well as a little photo manipulation.

The screenshot from hanoodyACNH was initially shared on the Animal Crossing subreddit, offering a side-by-side comparison to the Silent Hill movie poster. Of course, the Silent Hill film took quite a bit of its visual inspiration directly from the first game, so it should look fairly familiar to fans of the series, even if they’ve steered clear of the movie.

Standing with their back turned, the player character mirrors Rose Da Silva on the official poster, the film’s reimagined adoptive mother of Cheryl (or Sharon, in the film). The playable character looks on at a sign for the town of Silent Hill looming ahead, while the fog and mist pours in, obscuring the majority of the area around her. A bird cage nearby resembles the one from a Silent Hill: Downpour quest, as well as those carried by the Silent Hill cultists in the film. While not directly taken from Silent Hill, there are plenty of other spooky Animal Crossing decorations, as well.

Fans of Animal Crossing and Silent Hill have poured into the comments asking the creator to upload the town as a Dream Island so that it can be fully explored by everyone. While it’s likely to look a bit different, if only because the Silent Hill town sign is Photoshopped rather than an in-game edited prop, Dream Islands maintain the weather conditions that were present when the town was saved, so players could at least be spooked in the fog.

Without more extensive modding tools, this is likely one of the closest representations of Silent Hill that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be able to get. While it bears less of a resemblance to the iconic horror series than, say, a recent Silent Hill Amnesia mod, it just goes to show that fans are still passionate about Silent Hill, even years after its last major release. Other games, like Dead by Daylight, have shown that Silent Hill is still popular among fans, despite the drought of new content, but it remains to be seen if Konami will ever carry on with the series again.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now for Switch.
