After Netflix treated GLOW to its Borat-esque “you’re renewed… NOT” strategy, cast members and fans alike were understandably a bit put off. However, the cast recently put that energy into a good cause with a YouTube livestream focusing on encouraging voter registration as well as some lively discussion of the future.
During the livestream, cast members including Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, Marc Maron, and others came together to support voter registration organization HeadCount and its #GoodToVote initiative while also discussing the show’s unexpected cancelation. Since the stream had been planned before news broke about GLOW‘s tragic fate, it turned into a sort of impromptu memorial service for the beloved show taken before its time.
GLOW made headlines over the past week after Netflix rescinded its previous order for a fourth season, choosing to simply cancel the show altogether due to the coronavirus pandemic. While the decision is technically understandable from a business standpoint, it seemed a rather low blow for fans who had been told under no uncertain terms that the series would return for one final season.
Luckily, there seems to be interest among both fans and creators in a possible movie to tie things off properly. The cast and crew had already begun work on season 4 before the lockdown began, though since they only managed to complete shooting a single episode, it could technically be a less than monumental task to translate the remaining material into a film format. Marc Maron floated the idea during the livestream, prompting moderator Jessica Radloff to pose a question to the cast on whether they would all be willing to take part. A unanimous “hell yes” was her answer.
This sort of move isn’t unprecedented. Among other instances, arguably one of the most well-known cases involved the Joss Whedon show Firefly, which Fox canceled after a single season. While there was likely plenty more story to be told if it had continued, the creators and cast elected to condense it all into on final hurrah in the form of the feature length film Serenity. Presumably, a GLOW movie would feature fewer gruesome death scenes.
Whether or not GLOW gets to end things on its own terms with a movie, nothing can take away the fond memories fans built during their time with the show. It’s always tragic when a series is unable to end things on its own terms, so hopefully the film gets the green light.
