Haunting of Bly Manor Star Didn’t Know Her Character’s Secret

The Haunting of Bly Manor, the follow-up to Netflix hit The Haunting of Hill House, came out a few days ago and viewers hungering for a good ghost story binged it over the weekend. Featuring many of the same actors as Hill House, albeit in brand new roles, Bly House follows the extended family caring for a pair of orphaned children: their au pair Dani, Owen the cook, Jaime the gardener, and housekeeper Hannah Grouse.

T’Nia Miller, who pays Hannah, revealed some behind the scenes secrets of the Netflix ghost series in an interview with TVLine. Secrets that are going to be revealed in this post. Anyone who hasn’t watched Bly Manor yet should stop reading now. Seriously, what’s about to be revealed is a big deal. Last warning.

Miller was initially unsure about going out for the character of housekeeper Hannah, saying “she [Hannah] was very nice, and I thought, ‘This is not really my kind of role.’”  And, indeed, Hannah’s story is very sweet for about half the series, as she defends the memory of her employer Charlotte against Patrick’s thieving and also flirts shyly with Owen. And then she got the script for episode 5 and discovered that Hannah was dead.  “Mike [Flanagan, creator and showrunner] really is cheeky,” says Miller. “He’s a cheeky bugger. He’s great. I love his sense of play and adventure. He’s a flirt. He’s a flirt with these scripts. He is teasing you and getting you all riled up and then, you’re like, “Oh.””

When asked why she thought that Hannah was able to break the “rules” of being a ghost in the show, Miller responded “…I think it’s just sheer will and determination that, no, [Miles and Flora are] not her children, but as far as she’s concerned, they are her children. This is her family, and she’s like a lioness. …it’s that determination that allows her to have a physical manifestation to be able to do and to touch things in the real world and imagine what outfit she’s going to wear that day.”

The Haunting of Bly Manor is based on the novel The Turn of the Screw by Henry James and is the second of Netflix’s Haunting anthology series. It’s the latest release from experienced horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan who along with Trevor Macy is exclusively signed to Netflix with upcoming projects Midnight Mass and another series of novel adaptations The Midnight Club on the way.

The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor are available to stream on Netflix now.
