It’s been a long wait since the delay, but Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs: Legion is finally on the way at the end of this month. For Watch Dogs: Legion, it’s been a long time coming for a game that was meant to release seven months earlier in March. Obviously a lot has happened for Ubisoft in the past year, with Ghost Recon: Breakpoint and The Division 2 not performing as well as hoped, alongside the turmoil of assault and misconduct allegations throughout the publisher’s workforce. Despite all of this, Watch Dogs: Legion finally releases
A lot has changed for the game in its extra year of development time, as over time Watch Dogs: Legion‘s scope and scale has expanded with each new trailer. Now, on the way to release, fans have a pretty clear picture of what Legion will look like when the game releases at the end of October. Ubisoft and the Watch Dogs: Legion development team have even outlined what’s coming in the near future for content updates and paid DLC expansions with the Season Pass. Here’s the progression of trailers for Watch Dogs: Legion, from its reveal in 2019 all the way to its post-launch content reveals this month.
Back at E3 2019, the next evolution in the Watch Dogs franchise was unveiled during Ubisoft’s showcase. This was the trailer that set the stage for the futuristic, post-Brexit London that the rumors had been hinting at. Ubisoft introduced this new dystopian world of Watch Dogs, alongside its primary gimmick of being able to “play as anyone” in the game. This trailer accompanied the first gameplay demo of the game, showing off just how recruiting and playing as any character in the game functioned. This would set the stage for future updates on the game.
If the game’s initial trailer didn’t hammer the point home blatantly enough, Watch Dogs: Legion made an entire separate trailer to put even more emphasis on “play as anyone.” In comical fashion, the “teacher” in the trailer basically explains that NPCs are generally all recruitable to the DedSec cause. Everyone explains exaggerated versions of open-ended missions in Watch Dogs: Legion, and its just as uncomfortable as it looks.
For some of the already die-hard Watch Dogs fans out there, Ubisoft also happened to announce Watch Dogs: Legion‘s extravagant collector’s edition as well. Among all the usual bonuses like steelbooks/stickers/posters, the Season Pass is included, early access to the game, alongside a perfectly disturbing “Ded Coronet” mask that matches the absurd masks characters wear in game.
Fast forward to 2020, and after a long dormancy from Watch Dogs: Legion and Ubisoft as a whole, the publisher returned to E3 with the inaugural episode of Ubisoft Forward. During that digital presentation, “Tipping Point” was premiered to reintroduce Watch Dogs: Legion in 2020. This highly stylized animated film was created by Alberto Mielgo, an Emmy award winning director and animator who produced an episode for Netflix’s Love, Death, & Robots.
Following the unique animated short came the new gameplay overview for Watch Dogs: Legion, showing what had changed or expanded in the extra year of development since last E3. After a quick overview of the story of Watch Dogs: Legion, and the introduction of main villain Nigel Cass, Ubisoft showed off a few gameplay scenarios tackled several times by different character types.
By now, players have gotten to know many of the potential playable characters throughout this dystopian London, but this Watch Dogs: Legion trailer unveils some of the villainous forces players will need to tangle with. Alongside Nigel Cass, the game’s various sub villains are given some screen time. Not only that, but this latest trailer shows off even more recruitable characters to play as in Watch Dogs: Legion.
Earlier in September, Watch Dogs: Legion took the time to expand and examine its futuristic London setting. Each borough of London’s twisted remix by Watch Dogs: Legion is showed off in greater detail. The trailer highlights various graphical features coming to the PC version of Watch Dogs: Legion, including RTX raytracing, Nvidia DLSS, alongside impressive shadows and lighting for the higher end PC rigs.
While the “play as anyone” gimmick may not have a central character to center Watch Dogs: Legion‘s story on, there is a reason for building up the resistance in Watch Dogs: Legion. This story trailer outlines the dynamic between Albion, the Kelly crime syndicate, and the mysterious terrorist attacks that are plaguing the city. Players get to work in order to determine who is behind the various attacks, all while dealing with the various other forces threatening to take over London. This was the biggest knowledge drop on what players will be up to story-wise, and will likely be the last before the game releases.
Lastly, alongside everything that’s coming on Watch Dogs: Legion‘s release, Ubisoft and the development team have also outlined plans for the game’s season pass and free content updates coming soon. Post-launch, coop multiplayer will be added in December, alongside unique coop-only missions. There’s also a strange “SpiderBot Arena” PvP mode coming to the game that looks like hectic fun. Alongside several other free online updates, the game’s season pass begins with Bloodline, a paid expansion featuring Aiden Pearce from the first game. Additional hero characters, including one from Assassin’s Creed, will also be coming with the season pass.
And, so far, that’s it for every trailer leading up to Watch Dogs: Legion‘s release date. Presumably the game will have one more launch week trailer, but these few trailers should provide a glimpse on what to expect in just a few weeks.
Watch Dogs: Legion releases on October 29, 2020, for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are coming at each console’s launch.
